Notes for NANCY LOGUE:
Obituary
Effingham Democrat (Effingham, IL) Thursday, December 19, 1878
"An old lady, named McKenzie, who was visiting a daughter here died suddenly Saturday morning. She also has relations living near Moccasin. Her remains were buried Sunday afternoon at the Catholic cemetery."
About Nancy (Logue) McKenzie, very little of any factual nature is known other than her ancestry. However, in terms of family stories, according to the late Lewis Rhodes, his great-grandmother Nancy once owned a pet cow that allowed no one but this woman to milk her. From a family story that Lewis often heard, at one time his great-grandmother Nancy became ill. Apparently, the cow would not cooperate and allow anyone to milk her. It was quickly decided that Lewis's mother, Nancy (McKenzie) Rhodes, grandaughter of Nancy Logue McKenzie, should put on her grandmother's clothes, and then the cow, recognizing the scent of its owner, would hopefully permit Mrs. Rhodes to milk her. As a joke on the cow, the deception evidently worked until Nancy (Logue) McKenzie recovered sufficiently to resume her daily task.
Nancy (Logue) McKenzie died on Saturday, December 14, 1878. According to the vital statistics cards at the Effingham IL County Court House, she died at approximately 7:00 a.m. at 74 years, 8 months, 19 days; the cause of her death was typhoid fever.
Records at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Effingham reveal that Anna McKeansey, whose husband was Gabriellis McKeansey, was buried from St. Anthony on December 15, 1878.
Nancy married Gabriel D. McKenzie on 29 Apr 1824 in St. Luke's Catholic Church, Danville, Knox County, Ohio. "Mrs. Morris Logue went to Martinsville township Thursday to visit her aged mother*, Mrs. Brownlee Barr. Mrs. Barr had been in poor health for some time, and soon after her daughter's arrival she took worse and was soon dead. The funeral took place Saturday and was attended by all of Mr. Logue's family."
(*Compiler's Note--Mrs. Morris Logue was Malissa Ann Wilcox, who, interestingly, was listed as Malissa Barr, age 13, living with the Barr family in the 1870 Martinsville, Clark Co., IL Census. Malissa Ann Wilcox married Morris Logue, Elenora McKenzie Barr's first cousin once removed. In fact, Elenora McKenzie Barr, daughter of Mary Ellen Logue and Aaron McKenzie, was a double first cousin of Honora McKenzie Logue, daughter of Nancy Ann Logue and Gabriel McKenzie and mother of Morris Logue. Aaron and Gabriel were brothers, and Mary Ellen and Nancy Ann were sisters, both daughters of Daniel Logue and Honora Logsdon. As a sign of their mutual regard for the Barr family, Morris and Malissa Logue named their first son Brownlee Logue)

MARTINSVILLE
"Mrs. Brownlee Barr died at the family residence south of Martinsville on the 4th. She was 72 years old and was a most estimable lady. The funeral was conducted Saturday and the burial took place at the Baird cemetery."
Obituary
"Clark County Democrat," (Marshall, Clark Co., IL) July 17, 1901 (no page listed)
OBITUARY
"Elenorah McKenzie was born in Knox county, Ohio, August 17, 1828, and departed this life July 4, 1901, aged 72 years, 10 months and 17 days."
(Compiler's Note--The monument in the Baird Cemetery reads 72 years, 10 months and 13 days, and the second obituary also reads 72 years, 10 months and 13 days. I would be prone to accept what is inscribed on the monument.)
"She was married to Brownlee Barr January 23, 1845. While they lived in Ohio four children were born to them. Seeing the need of a home they moved to Illinois and purchased a small farm in Clark county, in 1852, where they lived until death separated them. Eight more children were born to them, seven of which survive her. Mary E. Hills, living in Missouri, Francis E. Auld, C. R. Barr, Susana Morgan, Geo. D. Barr and Sarah C. Ulrey, of this county, and Mrs. Rose Thornton, of Washington county, Illinois, are the children. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Thornton."
"Mrs. Barr united with the M. E. church many years ago during a revival held by Rev. Harrison Cowden. She remained with this church for about eleven years and then she placed her membership in the Southern Methodist church at Hopewell where she was a faithful member until death called her home."
"She was very patient during her long sickness, and constantly trusted in her blessed Savior. The funeral services were held by Rev. Mathes assisted by Rev. Brown. Burial was at Baird Cemetery--Martinsville Planet."

News Story
"Clark County Democrat," (Marshall, Clark Co., IL) January 29, 1896 (no page listed)
"Mr. and Mrs. Brown Lee Barr and wife (sic--Mrs. Brown Lee Barr was the wife) celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Thursday. Children, relatives and friends came in and enjoyed a sumptuous repast and gave them several nice presents. For 50 years they have traveled hand in hand down the aisle of time and now are enjoying good health and all the comforts of life. The merry crowd departed after wishing them another half century of partnership happiness. Mr. Barr is 71 and Mrs. Barr 68."
{Compiler's Note--In 1896, the Thursday referred to by the Clark County Democrat reporter was January 23, 1896. According to family records, Brown Lee Barr and Elnorah McKenzie were married January 23, 1845, not January 23, 1846. It appears the traditional date is incorrect, the Barrs were a year late in celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, or the date on the newspaper is incorrect)

Per an email from Dawn Marie Stricker Sanders dated July 16, 2014 comes the following with respect to John McKenzie (b. 1834):
1.His death date is 22 Feb 1893. Source: St. Luke's Records 1829-early 1900's, p. 187
2.He was born 1834. 2 Sources: 1) US Census 1850 for Fayette County, Illinois. His age is 16. 2) Mustered in 2 Nov 1861, age 27. Interesting note about his service--he was absent from duty due to illness (chronic diarrhea), but the reason for the absence wasn't known and he was charged with desertion. The charge was later dropped. I just received his service records.
3.Sometime between the 1850 census in Illinois and his marriage in 1860, he moved back to Knox County, Ohio. It appears that some of his brothers may have also moved back.. It is true that his father, Gabriel D. stayed in Illinois and is buried in Effingham county, Illinois.
4.Buried: 27 Dec 1893. He is buried in the Soldier Section of St. Luke's Cemetery. (Ed. Note: St. Luke's Catholic Church, Danville, Know County, Ohio).
5.I will forward the response to my email inquiry to St. Lukes regarding both John W. McKenzie and Charlotte "Charity" Critchfield. There is an explanation about death and burial. I'm hoping to get his grave registered with the Veteran's Project in Ohio.
6.His wife is Charlotte "Charity" Critchfield. I cannot as yet locate her parents. I'm going to expand my search for her parents to counties surrounding Knox, as there is evidence that John Critchfield (rev war) settled in Holmes County. I'll check there first, before chasing down the Critchfields who went to NC.
7.She was born in 1843. Source: US Census 1870 for Howard Twp., Knox, Ohio She states her age is 27 and born in Ohio.
8.She died 27 Dec 1900. Source: St. Luke's Records 1829-early 1900's. p. 188
9.Ohio, Marriages, 1800-1958, online database at familysearch.org Marriage Date: 1 Feb 1860; Charity's father was dead, but mother gave her permission to marry. Knox county, Ohio

Dawn,
According to an index of deaths and burials, John McKenzie was buried Feb. 24, 1893. He was 58 years old. It does not give a burial location.
There is a listing for Charity McKenzie, buried Dec. 27, 1900, age 57. No burial location given.
In the back of this notebook, is a section for Veterans. John McKenzie is listed – Born 1834 per Roster – Died – Buried 2-24-1893, Army private, Co. K, 43rd O.V.I., Civil War, In service Nov. 2, 1861-March 3, 1862? (question mark following year) To the right of the listing it has Row 13, Gr. 38
There is a map of the old section hanging in the office identifying veterans & he is listed there, row 13, grave 38.
Eric Stutz is our caretaker. I talked to him. He cannot identify the graves. The inscriptions are very worn.
Sandy

Hi there,
I am researching my family. I have a copy of Koch's "St. Luke's Records 1829-early 1900's. There are two entries for deaths that I am writing about to ask if they are buried in your cemetery:
Page 187: 24 Feb 1893 John McKenzie 59 yr. He was a Civil War Veteran.
Page 188: 27 Dec 1900 Charlotte Charity Critchfield McKenzie 58 yr
I'm fairly certain that this John is her husband. There is a Civil War Widow Pension claim dated 8 Sept 1893. I am hoping to visit the cemetery in a couple of weeks, and would like to identify their graves if possible. Is there a care taker whom I could contact to find out if they are interred there?
Thanks so much for your time,
Dawn Sanders
In another email from Dawn Sanders on Luly 18, she states:
Mike,
John's middle initial "W" appears on his Civil War records and the pension record that names Charity as his widow. Wish I knew what it stands for. I am going to look for a will in Knox County Mon/Tues during my research visit. I plan to send docs to you sometime, soon
Dawn
