The following is a transcription of Ann Logsdon's will. It was copied from the Durbin Family History web site of Gene Klein:

In the Name of God Amen, I Ann Durbin of Frederick County in the province of Maryland. Widow being weak in body, but of sound mind and memory blessed be God for it, do this eighth day of July in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and seventy, make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, first I give and bequeath unto my six sons hereafter named viz. William Durbin, Samuel Durbin, Thomas Durbin, John Durbin, Nicholas Durbin, and Christopher Durbin the sum of one shilling sterling money to be paid unto each of them at the end of one year after my decease and no more of my estate. I also give and bequeath unto my son Edward Durbin one black mare branded thus _______ and no more of my estate. I do also give and bequeath unto my son Benjamin Durbin on feather bed and furniture and one large iron pot and no more of my estate. I also give and bequeath unto my four daughters hereafter named viz. Sarah McKensey, Ann Stevenson, Margret Brown, and Mary Logsdon, to each of them one shilling sterling silver money to be paid unto each of them at the end of one year after my decease and no more of my estate. I also give and bequeath unto my daughter Honour Durbin two cows and calves and one feather bed and furniture and all and every part and parcel thereof together with all and singular my household furniture, and every other matter of thing that I shall *** proposed of after the payment of my just debts and the above. And I also make and ordain my son Edward Durbin executor of this my last Will in trust for the intents and purposes in this my will contained. The following is a petition filed in 1838 by three of the sons of Samuel McKenzie (b. 1751) in which all of the children of Samuel are listed.

The petition of Samuel McKinsie, John McKinsie and Gabriel McKinsie of Allegany County, humbly showeth That there was surveyed and laid out pursuant to a resolution of the General Assembly (pssed?) at April Session, 1787, amongst the Lots to the Westward of Fort Cumberland now in Allegany the following distinguished by the number 3369, containing fifty acres And whereas the said lot was by the Commissioner appointed in ____ of an Act of November Session, 1791, Chapter 84, sold to Samuel McKinsie (your petitioner's father who fully paid the purchase money) for the Same. That Samuel McKinsie (your petitioner's father) has since departed this life intestate, leaving your petitioners and the following children and heirs at Law namely: Sarah McKinsie (who intermarried with Christopher Garlitz) Eleanor McKinsie, Polly McKinsie and Jane McKinsie (who intermarried with James Geatty). That said Samuel had three other children, namely Catherine McKinsie and Elizabeth McKinsie, both of whom died before their father, unmarried and without issue, and Moses McKinsie (who died before his father leaving the following children, namely, Lewis McKiney, Jeremiah McKinsie, Basil McKinsie, Hilleray McKinsie, Leo McKinsie and Isadore McKinsie. Your petitioners therefore pray, as no patent has ever issued on said Lot. Your Honor will direct a patent to issue to them for the Same, to hold for themselves and for those claiming as heirs of their late father, Samuel McKinsie, deceased and they will ever pray.

Daniel McKenzie (1) was born in Frederick County, Maryland about 1752. He married Mary Ann Chapman 2 DEC 1779 in Washington County, Maryland. Together they had seven children:

Daniel McKenzie and Mary Ann Chapman moved to Allegany County before 1792 and settled on land south of Cumberland. Daniel received a Patent for the land from the State of Maryland (5) in 1795. According to information contained in the Patent, he was able to purchase the land from the State at that time because he had originally settled on it. Pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly, he was given a preference to purchase the land before it was offered for sale to anyone else. Ultimately, he purchased Lots No. 3552, 3554 and 3569. Michael McKenzie of Mt. Savage, Maryland provided the author with more information concerning Daniel’s patent in November, 2010. There is a compilation of Military Lot Patents on record in the Maryland State Archives. (5.1) Daniel’s patents are set forth on pages 0348 and 0349. There also is a map that reflects all of the Military Lots, Tracts and Escheats that were awarded or sold to individuals in the late 1700’s and which contains Daniel’s patented lots 3552, 3554 and 3569. located south of Cresaptown. Daniel sold some of his land (50 acres) to William Shaw (6) in 1797.(7) On January 26, 1805, John Logsdon and Daniel McKinsy sold portions of lots 3568 and 3569 to Emanual Custer. (8) Then, in 1810, Daniel McKinzie reacquired from William Shaw the same parcel of land Daniel had sold to him in 1797 (50 acres). (9)

The Cumberland area was sparsely populated at the time Daniel McKenzie moved there. There were settlements in an area called Old Town as well as in Cumberland. (10) Daniel McKenzie along with Gabriel McKenzie, Josiah McKenzie, Moses McKenzie and Samuel McKenzie were listed as being some of the settlers living on land lying West of Fort Cumberland. (11)

Per information supplied to the author by Michael McKenzie of Mt. Savage, Maryland in November, 2010, Daniel McKenzie was quite active in the years immediately after his relocation to the area west of Cumberland. According to a 1974 issue of the Heritage Press newsletter, the following was the bond contract for replacing a bridge in the Cumberland area: ?”Pursuant to an order of the Levy Court the following bond as recorded this 2nd August 1796: Know all men by these presents that we, William Logsdon, John Logsdon, Ralph Logsdon and Daniel McKinzy are bound unto David Huffman, John Graham and Patrick Murdock for 747 pounds current money of the State. The condition: William Logsdon shall do and will and truly build and finish on or before 1st September, next, a good and sufficient wagon bridge over Wills Creektown of Cumberland at the place where the bridge lately stood, the said Bridge to be at least five feet higher than the late bridge, 16 feet wide with railing three feet high; he also to keep the same in good and sufficient repair for term of seven years and to rebuilt the same if carried away or destroyed, at his own cost except he not to replace, if the water rises over the bridge.” The Daniel McKinzy referenced was the son of Gabriel McKenzie (b. abt. 1715) . Gabriel lived in the Bald Knob area near Mount Savage, Maryland, where Earl Lepley’s property/residence currently is located as of November, 2010. Per the various maps referenced earlier, the Leplays currently live on the same 50 acres which Gabriel McKenzie owned in the 1790’s.

The 1800 census lists (12) Daniel McKinzie living in the Upper Old Town, (13) Georges Creek section of the county. His age was recorded as being in excess of 45 years as was his wife. There were three males at home under the age of ten, two males between ten and sixteen, one female between ten and sixteen and another female between the age of sixteen and twenty-six. (14)

The 1810 census lists Daniel McKinsey still living in the Upper Old Town, Georges Creek area. His age once again is listed as being in excess of 45. His wife was still alive. There was one male under the age of ten living with him, two males between ten and sixteen and one male between sixteen and twenty-six. There was one female between the age of sixteen and twenty-six residing in his household. (15)

The 1820 census lists Daniel McKinsey and his wife and two males, ages between sixteen and twenty-six residing in the Election District Number 6. (16) There is no record of Daniel in the 1830 census, which coincides with the fact he died in 1825. There also is no mention of his wife, Mary, as being a head of household at the time that census was taken. (17)

On June 9, 1812 Thomas Pollard conveyed 45 acres of property to Daniel McKenzie, which was referenced on plats at the time as “Allegany Republican”. That property later became the subject of an Equity Case in Allegany County after Daniel died without leaving a will. (18) The property was later sold by order of the Court sitting in Equity and was acquired by (James) Moses McKenzie, Daniel’s youngest son. (19) It remained in the (James) Moses McKenzie branch of the family until approximately 1900 when it was sold to Daniel Annan and later became a dairy. Unfortunately, on approximately December 8, 1935 a fire destroyed the log cabin situated on the property that was constructed by Daniel McKenzie in the early 1800's. An article about the fire and the history surrounding the cabin appeared in the Cumberland Times on December 15, 1935. (20)

In 1819, Daniel McKenzie and his wife, Ann McKenzie, were the sponsors at the Baptism of William McKenzie, born February 15, 1818 to parents, Samuel McKenzie and Rachel Durbin. The Baptism was held at St. Ignatius, the Roman Catholic Church in the Mt. Savage area, West of Cumberland, Maryland. (21) According to material compiled by Col. Gabriel T. McKenzie, the first McKenzies to emigrate to America were Catholic and came from Scotland. Maryland was a perfect choice for their new home since following the passage of the Act of Toleration in 1649, Maryland eventually became known as being a safe haven for Catholics.

Daniel McKenzie died without a will in 1825. His estate was submitted for administration shortly thereafter. The administrator was his eldest son, William. The Inventory of the personal property of Daniel McKinzie was filed on 13 SEPT 1825. (22) The First Account reflects the names of the individuals who were owed money by Daniel at the time of his death. (23) The Second and Final Account reflects that the following individuals received money from the estate after the personal property was sold: Ann McKinsey, her one third (24) share totalling $29.17, and dividends of $8.33 were paid to Richard McKinsey, Samuel McKinsey, Daniel McKinsey, Aaron McKinsey, Moses McKinsey, William McKinsey and Mary Myers, wife of William Myers. (25) Interestingly, the shares were not precisely divisable. One share for $8.34 (one cent more) was given to the eldest son, William, who was serving as the administrator. Seven children were listed as having received dividends.

Daniel McKenzie died before 7 SEPT 1825. Both he and Mary Ann Chapman were buried in the cemetery of St. Michael’s Church. (26)

McKenzie, U.S. Army, Retired, he states on a page relating to James Moses McKenzie “There is a family record filed with the estate and will of the above, James Moses McKenzie, in the Allegheny Courthouse in Cumberland, Maryland. Col. Gabriel T. McKenzie U.S. Army retired, great grandson of Moses filed said family record with Moses’ will but mistakenly said Daniel, father of Moses, was son of Daniel, instead of correctly stating Moses was son of Daniel, son of Gabriel, son of John of AA County.” (Ed. Note: This passage appears on page 221 of the notes of Gabriel T. McKenzie, U.S. Army Retired in Volume 3 of the author, Michael A. McKenzie’s genealogical source documents). (Ed. 2. The children of Daniel from this point through the end of the list were referenced in Equity Case #292, Allegany County Chancery Court records.

3. In the 1820 census Aaron McKenzie was listed as "Aron McKinsey". It's quite possible the census taker did not know how to spell.

4. In the Col. Gabriel T. MacKenzie genealogical research, a letter was written by J. F. Grant to Col. MacKenzie on December 13, 1929. In that letter J.F. Grant (who was born in 1854) recounts for Col. MacKenzie the names of the various sons of Daniel McKenzie (b. 1752). He starts by stating that the sons of Daniel (Ed. Note, b. 1752) were Aaron, Samuel, Richard, William, Moses (Ed.Note, actually James Moses) and Daniel, Jr.. He then lists the sons of each of the aforementioned individuals, as follows: “Aaron’s (our Aaron McKenzie b. 1792) sons were: Daniel, (Ed.Note This Daniel is in our family’s line. This Daniel is referred to as Daniel IV in Col. MacKenzie’s notes so as to distinguish him from other Daniels born during the preceding and succeeding generations) William, Silas (sic), Samuel and John Ephriam. Samuel’s sons were Henry, Grant, Aaron and Albert. Richard’s sons were William, Dennis and Levi. William’s sons were George, Edward, Taylor, Perry, Walter and John. Moses’ sons were Josiah, Thornton, Richard and Charles. Daniel, Jr. only had one son that I know of and his name was Henry.” The census records reflect that Aaron had two daughters. The author has not yet been able to determine their identity.

In addition to the foregoing letter, J.F. Grant wrote another letter to Col. McKenzie on October 7, 1929, wherein he states: (James) Moses McKenzie, your great-grandfather, was not the son of Moses the revolutionary soldier but was a son of Daniel McKenzie.”

10. Daniel McKenzie was taxed on his property in the early 1800's after the legislature passed the enabling legislation for the tax to be levied.
The legislature . . . passed an act appointing Andrew Bruce, Even Gywnn and Joseph Cresap a board of commissioners for Allegany County, and directed the commissioners of Washington County to transmit to them a list of all the real and personal properties in the new county. (1789).
The distance to Cumberland, the only voting place provided for in the Act constituting Allegany County, from Sideling Hill Creek on the east, and the Fairfax Stone on the west, was too great for the convenience of the people residing in those remote sections, and in 1799 the General Assembly passed an Act for laying Allegany County off into districts. The commissioners appointed were John B. Baell, David Hoffman, Thomas Stewart, William Shaw, George Robinette and Jesse Tomlinson, and the county was divided into six election districts, known as Glades, Selbyport, Westernport, Musselanes, Cumberland and Old Town.
The levy court was composed of the justices of the peace of the county. Those who signed the first levy made for Allegany County, 1791, were Daniel Cresap, Jr., Thomas Beall of Samuel, James Prather, Samuel Barritt and John Bayard, . . . the total amount of the levy was 286 pounds, 7 shillings, 7 pence. The rate of taxation was fixed at 7 shillings, 3 pence on every 100 pounds of property in the county . . . In 1804 the levy was 22 s. 11 pence per hundred pounds of property . . . It is also worthy of note that this was the last instance in which the old English money designation was used in the levy court of Allegany County. These lots "being the same lots described and mentioned in a Patent to Daniel McKinsey bearing date on the 14th day of November, 1795". It also included that tract or parcel of land known as Allegany Republican containing 45 acres described in a deed from Thomas Pollard to Daniel McKinsey.dated June 9, 1812.

Settler Log Home Prey to Flames
The above is a picture of the McKenzie log house on Winchester Road, near Annan Knolls, destroyed a week ago by fire. It is known that the building was erected before 1800 by Daniel McKenzie, a pioneer settler. The county land records show that the large tract now comprises the former Daniel Annan Farm was patented to McKenzie in 1795 by the State of Maryland.
McKenzie, it is thought, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and received military lots, as large tracts in the county were shown on the rough surveys. The farm was earlier known as the Moses McKenzie farm and comprised 435 acres from Cresaptown to the present Winchester railroad bridge. Moses McKenzie was a noted fox hunter and maintained a large pack of hunting dogs.
The land records show one part of the acreage termed as “Allegany Republican”, and two others, “Contest” and “Timberland”. Great stands of white pine and oak covered it. Josiah P. McKenzie, a grandson of Moses McKenzie, held title to the property until 1900 when the late Daniel Annan purchased it and improved the property and established a dairy. It was later laid out as a realty development.

21. Davidson, Phyllis and Koch, Richard, St. Ignatius (now St. Patrick), Mt. Savage, MD, St. Mary, Cumberland, Maryland Parishioners, Marriages, Baptisms, and Deaths 1819-1844, (apparently self-published) at page 16. St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church (now St. Patrick’s) was the original Catholic Church in the Mt. Savage area, west of Cumberland, Maryland. The records of St. Ignatius were compiled by Phyllis Davidson and Richard T. Koch. Their task was made easier since the records were maintained in English and not Latin, as were the records of St. Luke’s. Mr. Gary E. Hindes of Wilmington, Delaware had hired a professional genealogist, Ms. Jane W. McWilliams (Annapolis, MD) to do research on his Logsdon ancestors. Material from the Maryland State Archives (MSA) that she sent Hindes identified the source as MSA M3461-St. Patrick Church, 201 North Centre Street, Cumberland, Maryland, but included only pages with Logsdon entries. Gary shared those pages with other Logsdon researchers, including Mr. Jim Logsdon of Columbus, Ohio who forwarded copies to Davidson and Koch. Subsequently, additional pages were obtained from the MSA to complete the first 50 pages, and some selected additional pages. The compilers advise in the forward that they have not exhausted the material at the MSA. They hoped that someday this particular manuscript would be expanded through 1863, when the cornerstone for the current church was laid and St. Ignatius was renamed St. Patrick (of Mt. Savage, MD).

The compliers drew partially drew from A Century of Growth, Volume 1, the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Western Maryland, a book by Rev. Thomas J. Stanton. A copy of this book allegedly is available in the Frostburg Branch of the Allegany County, MD library. The Family History Center (LDS) in Salt Lake City also has a copy of the book. According to the compilers, because St. Mary’s Church in Cumberland was served co-jointly with St. Ignatius in Mt. Savage, they could not separate the history of the two churches. A quote from the Stanton’s book appears in the introduction of the compilation, as follows: “St. Mary’s Church of Cumberland may truthfully be called the mother of all Churches of Allegany County. It is historically certain that Catholicity had an existence in Cumberland, although very shadowy at the beginning, as far back as the French and Indian War. . . . As far back as 1770, Joseph [Josiah] Frost must be added to the pioneer Catholics; and ten years later the Arnolds, the Porters and the Logsdons were dwelling at what became Arnold’s Settlement (later called Mt. Savage). . . . It was not until 1819 that the first resident pastor, Rev. James Redmond, was appointed to Cumberland. “ Various other pastors followed thereafter. Their initials appear next to many of the entries.

22. Inventories, Allegany County Probate Records, filed 13 SEPT 1825. The total value of his personal property came to $185.14. The appraisers were Joseph P. Hillsay and George Seass. The appraisal was conducted on 7 SEPT 1825. Items mentioned in the Inventory include: one auld (old) wagon, $25.00, one bee hive, $1.25, one brown mare, $12.00, 5 hoggs (sic), $11.00, 5 shoates, $5.00, one 2 year auld steer, $4.50, wheat in the straw supposed to be 25 bushels, $15.62, rye in the stack, $3.00, one acre of buckwheat, $1.00, one stack of hay, $4.50, one feather bead, beadsted and furniture, $10.00, one shot gunn and shot pouch, $6.00, etc.

26. In a letter from Col. Gabriel MacKenzie to Mrs. Richard M. White dated August 28, 1961 (contained on Col. MacKenzie microfilm), Col. MacKenzie states: "Joseph P. Grant, deceased 1931, said in 1929 when I started the family research that Daniel was buried in the old Catholic Church cemetery in Frostburg, in walking distance of Mt. Savage. I went to Frostburg in 1957 and was told by the priest that the old church with all records had been destroyed or lost; a new church had been erected and the old graveyard had been cleared away for a playground for the church parochial school children. I could learn nothing relative to Daniel’s grave.

Josephine's information substantially updates what was published in Fayette Facts, Vol. 3, No. 4, pages 62-63 (1974), taking the family back an additional two generations, and forward . . .

The McKenzie family came to Fayette County with the Ohio migration of LOGUE and DURBIN families. Josephine writes, "To me, the preponderance of the evidence suggests that our Gabriel (1758-1832) was the son of Gabriel McKenzie(1715 - 1793) and Sarah Durbin. The most telling evidence is the Maryland Tax List of 1783 which shows a second Gabriel as a bachelor, on a different page, from the rest of the family.

The best record for Gab'l Jr. is the 1783 Tax Assessment for Washington County, Maryland. This assessment is broken into two separate sections: Heads of Household and Bachelors. These sections are recorded on two separate pages of the list.

I can't believe I'm still up and it is 2:30 in the am. I'm reading the documents on your website (ed. note website would be Michael McKenzie's Mckenzies of Early Maryland website - www.mckenziesofearlymaryland.com). I noticed something very interesting.

In your Sources section, under Gabriel McKenzie, you have a paragraph which describes two land transactions for the year 1792. In the first, Gabriel and his wife cleared up a problem with the release of her dower rights on 25 April 1792. You have a copy of this document in your media section. Gabriel and his wife both sign this document with their marks. In the second transaction, as described below, Gabriel sells his Lot 3365 to Peter Majors on 16 May 1792, which is less than one month later.......But this is not the same Gabriel.

If you look closely at your Media items 117, 118, and 119, this document clearly say "Gabriel Jr." His mark is also different than that of his father. Also, note there is no mention of Sarah in this document. This is Gabriel's son, the same Gabriel Jr. who was a bachelor in the 1783 tax assessment. Your Media items 120 and 121 from 1803, however, say simply "Gabriel." I believe Gabriel Senior died in that period of three weeks between 25 April and 16 May 1792.

Your paragraph says: "One of the last known land transactions involving Gabriel McKenzie occurred in connection with a patent he received for land west of Fort Cumberland on which he had settled. In November 2010, Michael McKenzie of Mt. Savage, Maryland provided the author with a copy of the patent issued by the State of Maryland to Gabriel McKenzie. According to Michael, the patent was difficult to locate because the property actually was patented to Peter Mayors (Majors) on May 23, 1803, although the patent itself reflects that the property was surveyed for Gabriel McKinsey..(18) Per the documents, Gabriel [this is Gabriel Jr. not Gabriel] appeared before the Honorable Andrew Bruce, one of the Justices of the Peace of Allegany County, Maryland on May 16, 1792 and conveyed the fifty acres of land comprising lot number 3365 to Peter Mayors (Majors). The lot was described as being in the “reserved land west of Fort Cumberland”. This last document is a little confusing in that it could be interpreted that Gabriel was still alive in 1803 and was once again acknowledging that he was assigning lot 3365 to Majors so that he could obtain his patent. Since it is assumed by researchers that Gabriel was born abt. 1715, he would have been 88 years old in 1803 if he was still alive and capable of assigning the property to Peter Majors."

I don't want to speculate on how it happened that Gabriel Jr. was able to sell his father's land. The legal ramifications of that are beyond me. But it appears that he did just that.

Also, I noticed that Media item 162 (Lot Map with Settler's Names, 1800) has an error in the lot numbers for Peter Majors and Gabriel McKenzie. The other Lot Maps are correct. I know that you didnt annotate this particular map, but I thought you might want to know because it has the settler's names on it. Lot 3365 is the verticle triangle. The upside down triangle to the left of it, marked "Peter Majors Lot 3365," should say "Lot 3376." Since this map is dated 1800, I'm assuming Peter Major's name should be on Lot 3365, in lieu of Gabriel McKenzie's name.

I think these deeds combined with the tax rolls conclusively prove that gabriel, Jr. was the son of Gabriel (b. 1715)

Moses Porter's will was probated in Allegany County, Maryland, on 5 January 1795. The will was dated 10 July 1794, and mentions his wife Margaret, sons Aaron, John William, Joshua, Bethel,Thomas, and Moses, and daughters Eleanor and Sarah. The executors were his wife Margaret and his brother John. Witnesses were William Shaw, Aaron Mackenzie, and Michael Porter.

Aaron doesn’t show in 1830 census. Other researchers say he died 1829. Have found no record of marriage, death, burial. No info on children.

MacKenzie's notes appears the following excerpt of a real estate transaction involving a "John" McKenzie, who may be this one, as follows: 1802, 1st April between William Stidger of Allegany County, State of Maryland and John McKinsey, son of Gabriel of the same state, Lot 3683 westward of Fort Cumberland and also a tract of land called Matthews Addition for which the same William Stidger gave his bond of conveyance to said John McKinsey on the 27th day of January, 1800.

That's all I could come up with! While I agree with the theory that John A.
was of the Gabriel line, I question if he was Gabriel's son, as all of them

Item 1. There is evidence that John to Kentucky was son of Gabriel 1715.
According to Durbins, Logsdons and Related Families by Wm Jesse Durbin, Bible records give the date of Sarah Durbin McKenzie's birth as 19 Sept 1725. Easily possible for her to have a child in 1765. In Allegany Co Land Records 1802 Bk c p.475 deed from William Stidger to John McKenzie of Gabriel dated 1 April 1802. The deed reads "John McKenzie son of Gabriel".
The land was lot 3683 and Mathews Addition.The exchange of money actually took place 7 Jan 1800, according to the deed.
Page 476 is the record of the sale of the same land to Patrick Murdock.
Says land was patented 2 Dec. 1799. Lindsay, wife of John McKenzie, appears in court to relinquish her right of dower.
Page 477 is the record of a bond between Stidger and John," recorded at the request of John McKinzie of Gabriel" Stidger binds himself for $580 "sealed with my seal and dated 27 Jan. 1800."

(Sounds like they got behind on making sale official. Descendants in Allegany Co say John sold the land just prior to moving to Kty, Will send you my copy of the deed, if you want it, Mike.))

Item 2: Norma Kramer did a lot of research in the 1980s on the McKenzies in Macon, Sangamon, Shelby and Christian counties,all adjoining counties in IL.
These McKenzies seem to be branches of the McKenzie brothers of Generations
2 & 3. According to Helen Cox Tregillis, a professional researcher hired by Norma, 1830 Shelby Co census shows Gabriel, Henry, John, Samuel and Aaron.
Gabriel went to Iowa according to the 1845 Shelby Co Delinquent taxlist.
(NOTE: This may be where we get confused. Years ago I found an Aaron b. 1835 Ill in Scott Twp, Madison Co. Iowa.1880 census.

Item 3: This Gabriel may tie to this line. ( The line of John of John of Joshua RW was also in Christian Co but no Gab in that line)

4. Norma is descended from Henry 1801 son of John and Linday. She also has the line of another son Absalom.I also corresponded with a Bob McKenzie, construction worker in Hawaii. descended from another son Daniel. Bob was a WW II vet so may not be alive now.I tried to reach out to Norma but SS Death Index tells me she died this year, age 88.

Several children of Sarah died during an epidemic of scarlet fever. Samuel and Israel lived at Avilton on adjoining farms. John moved to Laurel Hill in Pennsylvania. Henry bought the home farm, but sold it in 1859 to Leo and Jeremiah McKenzie. One of Israel's sons was Isadore, who married Matilda Elizabeth McKenzie; she inherited the old Garlitz farm from her father Jeremiah. Thus the old Garlitz homestead returned to Garlitz hands.

PREFACE

It is with great pleasure that the work of many McRenzie relation has preceded my recent attempt to put various sources together. Bernard Hilkens Sr. spent many years especially in retirement compiling his contribution. In 1966 I had tried to track down the descentants of Rachel Blubaugh as part of the large history of John Blubaugh I, which was published in 1977. Unfortun¬ ately it has taken many years for Rachel's family to reach publication.
Regardless of which copy you receive, the revision date listed here is never
complete. Updated sheets are always available for insertion.
Other McKenzie histories have been printed of other branches, but no one has prepared an extensive history of Gabriel and Rachel's family. On August 8, 1992, I reopened my limited McKenzie files and since then have steadily collect¬ ed this information by personal interviews with my laptop, numerous phone calls, and countless letters from cooperative cousins throughout the USA.
The process of compiling the remainder of Gabriel's descendants will con¬ tinue. I ask your help in providing missing information and correcting mistakes. Many copies of much smaller editions are in circulation. Often later information is inserted by adding alphabetical letters after the page number. This saves
making a whole new set of master pages, yet keeps the history in proper sequence.
Collecting genealogical information of relation is my hobby as a priest in a very large Catholic parish. Saint Paul, Westerville, Ohio. Seeing this history reach publication is an even greater joy. Several quotes of notable people have been added, as below. I hope you enjoy them and your heritage.

"INTRODUCTION" by Bernard T. Wilkens, Sr.
Several years ago our cousin, Bernard Wilkens, Sr., (1907-
94) of Youngstown, Ohio, wrote six pages in longhand about his McKenzie ancestry. What follows is the result of many years of his historical research by traveling to Europe, visiting his relation with pen in hand and writing from hundreds of hours of correspondence. In many ways his detailed outlines have become the skeleton of various parts of the history that follows. His persistence of searching for relation was that of a college
professor and engineer. Bernard's "bio" is on page 20. I have
edited parts of Bernard's "The McKenzie Family In America". -H.B.
"To the best of our knowledge, the McKenzie Family in
America stems from a Scottish Clan in Scotland that resided in the area called Glencoe; some intermarried with Irish, German, Polish, Italian and other immigrants.
Some McKenzies emigrated to the 'colonies' in the early part of the eighteenth century and early historican records of Mary¬ land confirm this. In that period few people could read or write and most historical records have been handed down by word of
mouth and as with any data so transmitted, names are misspelled, since the person recording the data spells it as they hear it.
The McKenzie name is found spelled some 13 or more ways in
the same family. A few samples from the Cumberland area are: McKinsee, McKensy, McKinzie and even to the dropping of the Mc resulting in Kinsey, Kinzy, etc. Over 20 different names have
actually been recorded from the same area!
One reason was very few of the early settlers could either read or write since they were farmers. Schools were not avail¬ able in the areas where they resided and since the parents could not do so, how were they to teach their children?
At the time the McKenzies came to the colonies, they settled in farming areas where they could make a living for their
families and had very little money. Thus no schools were avail¬ able to allow them to send their children for education. Schools at that time were only for the rich people - they could not
afford to send their children over long distances to the schools!
With this in mind we have attempted to trace the McKenzie family history and other "clans" that have intermarried here in America. Sometime after 1620 Lord Baltimore was granted
extensive areas in "the colonies" in an attempt to obtain good farmers and people willing to venture into these (at that time)
relatively wild and unknown lands in the area now called Mary¬ land.
King Charles I (of England) gave to his (Lord Baltimore's)
son, Cecilius Calvert, the area of Maryland, as it is now known.
To find people willing to forego their native country, Lord Baltimore went to the region of Glasgow, Scotland, where there were many farmers with excellent farms, seeking people willing to take a chance in a new country. There he was able to collect a large number of people who were almost entirely Catholic farmers.

In this Glasgow area there lived four McKenzie brothers: John, Samuel, Moses and Duncan. About 1686 (?) Duncan accom¬
panied Lord Baltimore to Maryland on one of his trips to his
colony in America and decided to remain and try his luck there.
In tracing the McKenzies in the early time of the "Maryland" area we have found the McKenzie name and been able to trace back to the father of Gabriel McKenzie - one Samuel McKenzie, who was
born in Maryland. In fact several Samuels have sons named
Gabriel, two of which are interconnected in this family.
And in the area of Scotland from whence came the early
colonial settlers of Maryland, they were all Catholics and thus Maryland was mainly a Catholic Colony - until the so-called
British Reformation when the King of England (Henry the 8th)
declared himself the "Head of the Church of England".
After the end of the Colonial-British War, a number of
German soldiers from the province of Hesse, Germany, who had been rented to the British king to fight for him in the "Revolutionary War", decided to stay in the colonies and try their chances as farmers in the new land.
In the early days of the colonies intermarriage was very
common with cousins marrying cousins in this family tree.
As the early records of family history were kept mainly in the churches and the parents being unable to read or write, many a priest or other churchman being unable to properly interpret a Scotch or Irish brogue to say nothing of a German trying to speak English! So the early settlers intermarried to produce a true American race! In those early days newspapers were few and far between and with only a very few people able to read or write, who needed them.
As you will notice in the families we are trying to trace
- certain forenames have been repeated from family to family -
even into the present day - both in the male and the female line
(which makes it difficult to track our ancestors).
To return to one Duncan McKenzie and the family that ensued we are indebted to early work by Albert McKinzie, of Gallia
Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, who gave information to Henry (Bud)
McKenzie of Monessen, Pennsylvania, now of Dayton, Ohio. Bud's lineage comes from Gabriel McKenzie's son, James Redmond. Barb McKenzie of Circleville has contributed much to our history.
In those early colonial days there was considerable migra¬ tion - generally westward, but some also both north and south. Under such conditions it was very difficult to maintain written records of who resided where, who had paid their taxes, who was eligible to vote, who resided in Pennsylvania or in Maryland.
Many other difficulties arise in tracing families in Mary¬ land due to a fire at the Annapolis Court of records which des¬ troyed most of the early records of the residents of the
surrounding area in the early years of Maryland and no other records duplicated the original ones.
I have tried to collect family history from a number of states in fairness to all. It's difficult to sift ashes to written data that may be readable. Occasionally a McKenzie relation is found who belongs within our family group."

Gabriel McKenzie was born June 30, 1794, in Maryland. His
ancestors are traced back to Ross Shire, Scotland, where Colin/ /Collins/Malcolm McKenzie was born c. 1630. Colin's son, John
Sr., was born c. 1659 in Saint Mary's Co., Maryland, and married
Sarah Ellinor Anderson.
John McKenzie Sr. is the father of John Jr., born c.1695
in Saint Mary's Co., Maryland. John Jr. and Catherine(Gabriel)
McKenzie are the parents of Gabriel, born c.1715.Catherine
Gabriel was a native of Ireland. Gabriel McKenzie married Sarah
Durbin in1742 in Frederick Co., Maryland. Their eldest child
is Samuel Sr., born c.1750, died1837, age86.
Samuel McKenzie Sr. and Rachel Durbin became the parents
of our subject, Gabriel McKenzie. The Marriage License of this Gabriel and his bride-to-be, Rachel Blubaugh, are recorded in the Probate Court Records at Alleghany County, Maryland, on June
2,1821.On July 30,1821, at Saint Patrick Church, Cumberland,
Maryland, Gabriel married Rachel Blubaugh, born c.1791 in
Maryland. The Dominican missionary priest, Father Nicholas
Young, O.P., witnessed their marriage. Father Young traveled to Somerset and Danville, Ohio, in the 1820-30's.
Rachel is the daughter of John Blubaugh I and Jememiah
Logsdon. She and Gabriel were very likely cousins. John is the son of Jacob Blubaugh I, who died in 1788 in Frederick Co., Mary¬
land and is mentioned in Jacob's Will. John Blubaugh I died in 1819 and Jememiah in 1832, both in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

By August 25,1842, Gabriel McKenzie is living in the Quinn
Settlement, Gallia Co., Ohio, where he remains into1845.On
August27,1874, he died at Minerton, Wilkesville Township, in
Vinton, Ohio, at the age of80 years,1 month and28 days.

Rachel and Gabriel are the parents of eight children, the first seven were baptized at Cumberland 1822-32. So maybe the
family moved after Susannah's birth in May 1834 as her baptism
is not recorded in Cumberland. Rachel's death is
The McKenzie children are Elizabeth Garrity/McKenzie (A),
James Redmond(B), Samuel(C), John(D), Rachel Emily Stanton
(E)Lidia(F), Ambrose(G) and Susanna(H).
A/2Garrity/Garety, Elizabeth(McKenzie/McKinzie), born May15,
1822, was baptized May18,1822, at Saint Patrick Church,
Cumberland, Maryland. Her godparents were Uncle Ben and
Aunt Mary Blubaugh. The 1870 and 1880 Census list her birth
in Pennsylvania, not Maryland. Cumberland was most likely the closest church.
Eliza's first marriage was to Thomas Garrity(Garlitz)
on Nov.22,1840, at Saint Luke Church, Danville, by Father
John Lamy. The issue of children and Mr. Garrity's death is
unknown at this time.
A/2McKenzie, Elizabeth(McKenzie/Garrity), second marriage to
William H. McKenzie on November3,1853, at Saint Mary Ch.,
Covington, Kentucky. Eliza died December19,1893, a widow
of30 years with burial at Saint Joseph Cem., Circleville.
William H., born March25,1830, in Ohio, but his
parents and place of birth is not known,He lived less than
ten years after his marriage to ElizabethIn the1860
Census of Wilkesville Township, Bill is afarmer, whose real
and personal estate is valued at$375.
"The Roster of Ohio Soldiers,1861-66War of the Re-
bellion," concerning114th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment,
Company F, vol.8,states that "William H. McKenzie, Private;
age32; date of entering service, Aug.16,1862; period of
service,3 years; remarks, died Jan.13,1863, at Arkansas
Post, Arkansas(of diarrhea and camp measles)." Burial is
at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
Elizabeth and William's six children were Lydia Ann,
Edward, Joseph G., Rachel E., Mary M. and Anna Susanna
(born 3 months after Bill entered the service). All these children were born in Ohio, except for Lydia.
A/3McKenzie, Lydia Ann, born July29,1854, in Covington,
Kentucky, baptized Sept.3,1854.She died Aug.17,1928,
with burial at Saint Joseph Cem.,single.
A/3McKenzie, Edward A., born Feb.221857, and died August
1857, with burial at Saint Joseph Cem.
A/3McKenzie, Joseph G., born May13,1858.
A/3McKenzie, Rachel E., born Sept.15,1860, died March14,
1861, with burial at Saint Joseph Cem.
A/3McKenzie, Mary M., born Feb.15,1861, died Sept.23,
1881, and is buried at Saint Joseph Cem., single.
A/3McKenzie, Anna Suzanna, born Nov.26,1862, died Dec.19,
1925, and is buried at Saint Joseph Cem., single. Her
tombstone states, "sister of Eliza (Elizabeth) McKenzie."

B/2McKenzie, James Redmond, born Sept.7,1823, named after
the priest, Father James Redmond, of Cumberland. He was "baptized on September 19, 1823, at Saint Patrick Catholic
Church, Cumberland, Maryland, by Father T. Ryan, with Catherine McKensey as godmother".
James married Sarah Ellen McKenzie on Nov.3,1846, in
Ross Co. Sarah's parents were Caleb and Margaret(Magers/
Majors) McKenzie. Born October8,1831, on March11,1833,
she was baptized in Knox Co., Ohio, probably at Saint Luke,
Danville, where her father is listed on March26,1831.
It should be noted that two brothers married sisters.
James' younger brother, Samuel, married in February1846 to
Margaret, sister of Sarah McKenzie. Caleb McKenzie died
after Sarah's birth. His widow married Joseph Sapp in1837
at Saint Luke Church, Danville.
In the1850 Census Margaret Sapp is living in Ross Co.
with Samuel and Margaret McKenzie.
The family of James McKenzie according to the1850,1860
and1870 Census records are living in Vinton Co. as farmers.
This J. R. McKenzie family moved to Jackson Township,
Pickaway Co. in1876.Inhe moved his family to
Franklin Co., where they bought a farm and set up a family milk delivery business. The horse-drawn milkwagon was
painted black with the lettering of J. R. McKenzie painted on the side. Milk was carried in a large container in the wagon and people came to the wagon to receive their milk.
About 1893 the McKenzie diary barn burned to the ground. Unfortunately the fire was deliberatly set by one of the
children who "was refused a horse to ride into town". This was a tragic setback for the family and J. R. was never the same after this terrible financial reversal. The milk cows, horses and milkwagon were saved.
Jim and Sarah were blessed with thirteen children. James
died on August1,1905, at Shepherds, Ohio, with burial at
Mt. Calvary Cem., Columbus, in the Cathedral Section D, Lot
112, Graves2-3, beside his wife.
Sarah was an invalid for two years before her death of
"paralysis on July24,1899.She lived in Marion Township,
Delaware County. Her funeral was at Saint Peter's,
Columbus."
The Ward Family Bible provided full names and birthdates of the McKenzie offspring: Joseph, Thomas, Francis, John, Agnes Welsh, James, Margaret Ward, Edward, Sarah (Sister
Mary Alonso CSC), Samuel, Ignatius, Caleb and Mary Stecher.
B/3McKenzie, Joseph Gabriel, born April17,1848, farmer and
living at home in June1880.He married Lucy/Laura Alice
Mathes on Nov.18,1880, in Ross Co., maybe at Minerton.

In 1883 Gabe and Laura took their two firstborn, Gus
and the baby, Sarah, to Kansas in a wagon train. The
purpose was to link up with other McKenzie cousins already there, but not finding a good job, they returned the next year. Sarah was a frail child and rode on a pillow on the wagon bed.
Gus, as a young boy, remembers the return trip with an¬ other wagon train a year later and sitting around the
campfire watching the fire gleaming off the red eyes of wolves at night.
Gabriel was struck by a car while crossing West Broad Street to visit his son, Alonzo. He lived several days
and died June21,1927, at Mt. Carmel Hospital. Laura
died Nov.9,1945, in Marion, and is buried beside Gabe
in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Columbus, in the Saint Joseph Section.
"Gabe" and Laura are the parents of eight: Gus, Sarah Simmons, James, Thomas, Anna and Mary (twins), John and
Alonza/Alonzo.
B/4McKenzie, Augustus "Gus" Stanislaus, born May7,1881,
on Feb.12,1907, married Margaret Maud Wright, daughter
of George Washington Wright and Eliza Ellen Dopp.
Father Wm. McDermott witnessed their marriage at Holy Family Rectory, Columbus. After Josephine's death
Maggie took instructions and became Catholic.
Maggie was born Apr. 20, 1887, at Ripley, W. Virginia.
She was an 17 year old graduate of Clinton Township High School. Since she passed the standard "Boxwell Test" Maggie had plans to become a teacher. When she was offered a teaching position many, many miles away by horse and buggy, she turned it down, not wanting to lose her future husban
The newlyweds were ambitious people and lived early
in Franklin County, and in Worthington, where Laura and Anna were born. They raised their nine children on
Rt. 310 after moving in 1926 from 3 acres on Tremont
Road, just noth of Lane Avenue.
Previously Gus worked for Sciote Country Club and took care of the golf course. In the winter he sprinkled the tennis courts to make ice rinks from 1918-20. He cut
the golf course with a triplex pulled with his team of horses.
Gus was a contractor - digging cellars and grading
cellars in the Upper Arlington area. This was prior to 1926 when he also used slip scrapers for housing developments. He hired a number of men and teams of horses.
Apparently successful, Gus developed ulcers, so
decided to buy a 100 acre farm just south of Johnstown
on State Route 310 in Licking County. The family hosted
both McKenzie and Wright family reunions for many years.

Maggie and Gus raised their family of ten children
on their homestead: Josephine, Laura, Anna Reich, Ida
Crow, George, Margaret, Grace Bowman, Winifred, Hugh and Thomas. Only Tom was born there.
Being very education minded, the six youngest daugh¬ ters all graduated from Alexandria High School. Maggie taught Gus the remainder of his deprived education.
She taught her children many songs and school cheers that she composed herself.
Gus died Nov.2,1966, and Maggie, March20,1977,
with burial at St. Joseph Cem., beside Josephine.
B/5McKenzie, Josephine Augusta, born July26,1910, died
Sept.24,1917, of typhoid fever. Gus bought six
burial plots at St. Joseph Cem., Columbus, for his
own family when Josephine died, but many of his family thought these plots were theirs.
Josephine had just entered second grade when she
and her mother both took sick and were taken to White Cross Hospital by ambulance. Maggie was in a coma
when Josephine died. Gus paid all his doctor's and hospital bills by cash, long before insurance started.
B/5McKenzie, Laura Ellen, born May5,1912, attended
South Perry, Alexandria Junior and High Schools. She worked as a practical nurse in private duty for many years, until May 1977 when she retired from the
Citizens Journal and Columbus Dispatch.
Laura shares a home with her single sisters, Mar¬
garet and Winifred, since October1962 at1449 Coburg
Rd., Columbus, OH43227.The girls took care of their
parents for many years at this residence until their deaths.
B/5Reich, Anna Mae(McKenzie), born Aug.26,1914, was a
"Rosy the Riveter" at Curtis-Wright airplane assembly during World war II. She later worked as an operator for the telephone company in Columbus and for many years for several families as a governess. Anna met her husband-to-be, Herman, while employed as a hand painter at the Capital Art Works Factory, Main St., Bexley.
Herman, German born, had moved up from Florida,
where he was a creative artist, and had mastered the Meisner Process. He made molds and unusual casts of delicate art carvings and even a Baptismal Font. His speciality was concrete in colors, ornamental stone and reproductions of high quality.
Born Feb.22,1906, Herman is the son of Franz
Josepf and Ida Catherine(Lemmle) Reich of Munich.
Herman Josef Reich and Anna Mae were married by a
judge on May 27,1948, in Columbus, and later their
marriage was blessed on Oct.8,1983, at St. Juliana
Church by Fathers Reinz and Magee, which placed them in "good standing" with their West Palm Beach parish.

Anna Mae and Herman lived in Florida since1948.
Their son is Joseph. Herman died Dec.27,1993.Anna
Mae resides at621 Glenridge Dr., West Palm Beach, FL
33405.
B/6Reich, H.(Herman) Joseph, born Jan.23,1951,
served in the US Marines1971-73. He is a Struc¬
tural Design Engineer. On Sept.27,1985, he mar¬
ried Karol Sue Klotz/Brocions, born Aug.16,1953.
The Reichs are marriage counsellors at their local
parish in Tallahassee. They live with her daughter,
Eryn Michelle Brocions, at1509 Pine St., Talla¬
hassee, FL32303.
B/5Crow, Ida Bell(McKenzie), born Dec.15,1915, on
Sept.14,1940, married George McMillen Crow, born
June,1906, and lived at Groveport, Ohio. George
died Aug.22,1976.Their children are Delora,
Georgia, and John.
Ida lives with her daughter, Georgia Harris, at732
Timberlake Dr., Westerville, OH43081.
B/6Durbin, Delora Ann(Crow), born Aug.25,1941,

the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Since her family was
unable to pay her senior tuition, Mary paid it out of her earned money with her early employment.
Francis was employed at Timkin Roller Bearing Co. as a screw machine operator (automatic) tending four
machines used in the process of making cones and cups used in the aviation industry.
On Dec. 12, 1942, Frank was inducted in the US Army
and served in the Infantry as a rifleman performing various duties in assaulting and holding enemy posi¬ tions in the North African and Italian Campaigns.
During Francis' two year tour of duty in WW II he was never able to be home on leave. Mary and two
lady boarders shared the rent of Mary's house. She worked for the Quartermaster at Fort Hayes, Columbus, and went to the downtown theatres to sell war bonds to patriotic citizens coming to the movies.
Frank's separation date is Nov.9,1944.He was
awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star
and the Purple Heart. After his discharge he worked as a car inspector for Penn Central RR, later Conrail. Mary retired from Westinghouse after working for 31
years.
They have five children: Bruce, Stephen, Grace,
John and Julia. In retirement they live in the home
they built in1967 at1460 South Western Rd., Grove

Vinton County. As a child he came to a farm on Route 315 north of Worthington at Mount Air. This farm was on both sides of the road just south of Delaware Co.
Known as Mac, Alonzo worked all the farm chores. He was gifted in working with horses, which he did in road building. He used his team and wagon to haul luggage for the Columbus Transfer Company, especially from the railroad depot to local hotels, etc. Like his Uncle James, Mac also operated a Columbus streetcar.
On a snowy Dec. 26, 1918, Mac arrived at Immaculate
Conception Church, Columbus, in horse and buggy to wed
Catherine Terwillinger, born Sept.23,1898.The family
lived in Columbus, then moved out into the country near Pleasantville in Fairfield County. Here Mac worked on local farms, then returned to Columbus, where he was employed at the OSU farms for twenty years.
In1970 Mac retired and died Dec.3,1976.His
funeral was at Our Lady of Victory Church and the
celebrant was Rev. Homer D. Blubaugh. Catherine died July 4, 1984, with burial beside Mac at Union Cemetery, Columbus.

the daughter of William E. and Catherine Ann (Madden),
while in the service. After discharge, Bill went to work for OSU where he became assistant farm manager for crops until retirement Jan. 1, 1980.
With carpentry as a hobby, Bill made each of his
four daughters their own distinct minature doll house. Their five children are Patricia, Marjorie, Donald,

The March 8, 1923, issue of The Circleville Union
Herald lists the obituary of Tom, stating that "In early life Tom was a farmer, but later in life became an engi¬ neer, having served in that capacity for a number of years in this city and in Pennsylvania." A grandson says Tom never lived in Pennsylvania, but his son Jerry did.
Tom was a stationary engineer who fired the steam
boilers at the Strawboard Works in Circleville. He and Jane are the parents of ten: Mary Wilkens, Jerry, Hannah Frances, M. Agnes Adams, Cecilia Schneider, Thomas James, John, Julia Catherine (Sister Mary Teresina CSC) and Rose
Elizabeth/infant.
Tom died March5,1923, age73, and Hanna, five days
later on March10,1923.Both are buried at Saint Joseph

studios where in the YMCA building downtown. He
supervised installation of equipment there and at
the studios on Sunset Boulevard. He was the chief
engineer at WKBN for 44 years until his retirement in
1974.
"He was also a veteran of the Naval Reserves and worked with Bell Laboratories during World War II.

at Stumpy Lane in the Circleville area. Jerry started the twelveth grade, worked for the Strawboard Works,
then moved to Monessen, Pa., where he worked first for Page Steel and Wire, later with Pittsburgh Steel Co.
Jerry married Elizabeth Betts, born Dec. 18, 1887, in
Gallatin, Pa. He met Elizabeth at a shoe store, where she was a clerk. Before their marriage on April 17,
1907, in St. Leonard Ch., Monessen, Jerry and Elizabeth both gave much of their wages to their parents for
family support, which was the custom then.
The four McKenzie children are Estelle Swade, James,
John and Henry. Jerry died March5,1969, at Greens-
burg, Pa., and Elizabeth, Mar.2,1960, with burial at
St. Mary Cem., Monongahela, Pa.
B/5Swade, Estelle Theresa(McKenzie), was born Sept.28,
1908, a grad of Douglas Business College in Charleroi, Pa. She was an employee of Pittsburgh Steel Co. and lost her job in the Depression. Later she moved to Washington DC to be near her Marine fiance, in 1942.
Stell married Paul Swade in Washington secretly,
where they lived the rest of their lives. She worked in the Pentagon a clerk in army historical records and Paul, a security guard at the War College. Paul was
48, on Good Friday,1953, when he died, and Stell, on
Nov.30,1970.They are buried at Monongahela, Pa.
B/5McKenzie, James Jerry, born Nov.9,1911, is a grad of
Monessen High School and became a metallurgist by attending night school. He spent his entire work life, 1928-65, at Pittsburgh Steel Co.
Jim married Catherine "Cassey" Finsinger on Thanks¬ giving Day, Nov. 24, 1938, in the midst of a heavy
snow. They moved to Donora, near Pittsburgh, in 1948.
Cassey is a grad of California State Teachers
College, Pa., where she became a freshman math teacher for the Donora Public School System.
Known as "Woody" due to his red hair, Jim, and his
wife have nine children. James died April2,1980.
Cassey, born Oct.23,1915, died on her birthday, age
75, and was buried Oct.27,1990, in Donora, Pa.

2.May, 1819, Samuel McKenzie, sponsors: Samuel McKenzie and Hanna Logston. Is this Samuel (1850, “Old Sam”, John’s father and this boy’s grandfather?
3.June, 1821, Harriett McKenzie, sponsors: Moses and Catherine McKenzie. I think this was Moses Ignatius McKenzie and his wife, Catherine. Moses Ignatius was a known child of Samuel ("Old Sam") and would have been John M.’s oldest brother.
4.September, 1823, John M. McKenzie, Jr., sponsor: Helen McKensey. Query: is this a misspelling of “Ellen”? If so, this may be John M.’s sister, Eleanor (Ellen_ and one of Samuel McKenzie’s (1751) daughters. John M. McKenzie's land was sold from his estate to Paul Hoffman in 1864. It states that his tract of land was adjoining lands of Soloman Engle, Frank Bittner and Jesse W. Beal. On John Mckenzie's Deeds it gave Flaugherty Creek as a boundary.

It states that his tract of land was adjoining lands of Soloman Engle, Frank Bittner and Jesse W. Beal. On John Mckenzie's Deeds it gave Flaugherty Creek as a boundary.

In the name [of God] Amen, I Richard McKinsie testator of Allegany County and State [of] Maryland, being sick and weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding, considering the certainty of Death, and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world, when it shall please God to call me hence, Do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, That is to say
First and principally I commit my soul to Almighty God, and my Body to the Earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named, and after my debts and funeral expenses are paid I devise and bequeath as follows
Item 1. I give and bequeath to [my] beloved wife 1 Feather Bed Bedstead and Bedding to be selected by herself 1 cow, her own choice, 1 cupboard, 72[1/2??] doz chairs [??]

Aron McKinsey (actual spelling) first appears in the 1820 census. (3) He is listed as the head of household. His age is given as being between twenty-six and forty-five. His wife is also listed in the same age category. There was one female child in the household, whose age is listed as being less than ten years old.

Aaron McKinsey appears next in the 1830 census. (4) At that time the records reflect that he had two male children under the age of five living at home, one male between the age of five and ten, one female between the age of five and ten and another female between the age of ten and fifteen.

The 1840 census (5) also shows Aaron McKinsey living in Election District 6 in Allegany County. There was one male under the age of five in his household, two males between the age of five and ten, one male between the age of fifteen and twenty, one female between fifteen and twenty and another female between twenty and thirty.

Aaron McKenzie was listed in the 1850 Census for Allegany County. (6) He was fifty-eight at the time his wife, Hannah, was fifty-seven years old. He was working as a laborer. Cyrus (age 21), Aaron (age 20) and John E. (age 18) were still living at home. Susan Baird, age seventeen, and listed as a teacher was living with them along with Emily _______, age 40 and a nineteen year old male. (7)

By the time the 1860 census was taken (8) Aaron and his wife, Hannah and their son, Aaron W. age twenty-four had moved to Hampshire, Virginia (now West Virginia). Aaron was sixty-six years old (which is off by two years if you compare it with the 1850 census and would have meant that he was born in 1794) and was working as a carpenter. Hannah was fifty-six years old (which also does not coincide with the 1850 census, since she was listed as being fifty-seven on that document). Aaron, Hannah and Aaron W. (9) were all born in the State of Maryland.

The 1860 census also provides us with information on Cyrus (Silas) McKenzie, who was two of Aaron’s sons. (10) He was living close by to his parents, was thirty years old and was living with Sarah E., age seventeen. The census reflects that they had been married in the past year. Silas (as it was listed in this census) was born in the State of Maryland.

Interestingly, the author was experimenting one night with the Ancestry.com census search program when he discovered Aaron McKenzie (b. 1792) and his wife Hannah McKenzie living in Jefferson, Noble County, Ohio in 1870. (11). They were listed as being 78 and 77, respectively. They were residing with John Kyles, age 56, his wife, Mary E., age 50, and their seven children. When you compare the 1860 census with the one from 1870, Aaron and Hannah McKenzie are residing with the Kyles in the Western District, Hampshire County, Virginia. The 1880 Jefferson, Noble County, Ohio census reflects that Mary E. Kyles was now widowed and living with her three youngest children. Aaron and Hannah McKenzie are no longer living in the household, which suggests perhaps that they died in the preceding ten years.

1. The census records in 1820, 1830 and 1840 reflect that Aaron and Hannah had two daughters, assuming that the young females actually living in their household were daughters and not simply female relatives who had come to live with them.

Notes:

Per the research of Col. Gabriel T. MacKenzie James Moses McKenzie and Margaret Agnes Porter McKenzie's tombstones had no lettering on them as they were red soft ferrous rectangular stones and time had obliterated all marking on them when he saw them in 1953 in the old Moses McKenzie Cemetary in Cresaptown, Maryland. A Mr. Sanford Robinette, 114 Winchester Road, Cresaptown showed Col. MacKenzie the above mentioned tombstones. Mr. Robinette is the husband of Lena Grant Robinette, daughter of Joseph F. Grant, deceased 1931, a grandson of James Moses and Margaret.

The (James) Moses McKenzie cemetery is located off McKenzie Tower Road, south of Cresaptown, Maryland. Take the Winchester Road Extension, turn left on McKenzie Tower Road. Go about .8 mile and the cemetery is on the right.

Moses McKenzie was listed in the 1860 Allegany County, Maryland Census as living in Disr=trict 6, page 193. His age was listed as being 65 years old. His wife, Margaret, was still alive and her age was listed as being 55.

They had the following children residing with them: Richard, age 22, Emily, age 19, Elizabeth, age 17, Ann, age 13, Charles, age 10 and Marian, age 3.

From the archives of Col. G.T. Mackenzie (Ret.) comes the following:

"there is a family record filed with the estate and will of the above Moses (James Moses) MacKenzie in the Allegany COunty Courthouse in Cumberland, Maryland where, I. Col. Gabriel T. MacKenzie, U.S. Army, retired, great grandson of the said Moses filed said family record with Moses' will but mistakenly said Daniel, father of Moses, was the son of Daniel instead of correctly stating that (James) Moses was the son of Daniel, son of Gabriel, son of John and Katherine."

I give and devise to my son Daniel R. McKenzie three hundred dollars to be paid to him as soon after the death of my wife Margaret McKenzie, as condition of my Estate will permit. The said amt being for sevices[sic] rendered after he became twenty one years of age.
All my Real Estate and all my Personal Property not herein before devised I give and devise to my dear wife Margaret McKenzie during her natural life and at her death I direct my Executor herein after named or the survivor of them to sell at such times upon such terms as they or the survivor of them may deem most benificial[sic] and advantagous to my Estate and they or the survivor of them are hereby authorized and empowered to make all nessessary[sic] conveyances of Title to the purchasors[sic] thereof and the proceeds of sales of my Real Estate and of my personal property I hereby will and direct to be equally divided in equal Portion share and share alike amongst my children vis Josiah P. The following information was received from Bobbie McKenzie in June, 2013. Future researchers will need to verify it if they are interested in this line.

Rosanne=eleanorrms@aol.com (need to check accuracy of email address) I have a copy of the death cert. of "Jno D. M. Mackenzie" b. 3 July 1829 in OH, and d. 22 March 1916 in IL. Gives name of father "Jno Mackenzie", born Maryland, and mother Margaret Clugston, born Maryland. The informant was my grandfather, who only went to 4th grade, maybe 6th grade in school....so the correct spelling of Clugston could have been Logsdon. Also, my grandfather's name ~ on the cert. gives an incorrect middle initial, which could indicate the person taking the info was not too careful.

John (1829) is believed to have been born in Gambier Knox Co OH.

John (1829) McKenzie is listed in the 1850 Knox Co OH census, along with
Sarah McKenzie. I have been informed they were married in 1848. John was
married more than once. Another wife, Emma Moreland, is the mother of my
grandfather.

She also has John & Margaret's marriage license record from Allegany Co, MD, their marriage record at the Catholic Church in Allegany Co, MD in 1822, their son's (John) baptism in 1829 at St. Luke Church in Danville, Knox Co, OH, Margaret's marriage to William Robeson in 1831, marriage record of the son John's marriages to Sarah Presley in 1849, to Caroline Southwick in 1852, marriage record of Joseph to Elizabeth Parker in 1862, copy of Joseph's death record in 1893.

The son John also married Emma Moreland who was in the Wash DC census 1860, age 14. I don't know when or where they married. But I found that her mother and brother were later married (not to each other :) ) in McLean Co, IL in 1872 and 1877.

Emma's sister married in Wash DC in 1862. She had another sister that I haven't been able to trace.

Re John McKenzie that married Margaret Peggy Logsdon........they got a m. license in Allegany Co. 30 Nov 1822 and were m. 3 Dec 1822 at the Catholic Church in Allegany Co., MD. There is a record of the baptism of Mary & Joseph in the book "Western Maryland Catholics 1819-1851" by Koch & Davidson. There is a record of the baptism of John (b 1829) in St Luke's Church, Danville, Knox Co. OH.

John & Sarah are in the 1850 Knox Co census. Their m. 1 Aug 1849 is in the Knox Co marriage record. She died in 1852 and he m. Caroline Southwick in 1853....also in Knox Co marriage record. Family lore.....he had a son named William before he married Emma Moreland. Don't know what happened to
Caroline, or when he married Emma. Emma was from Wash.DC. He & Emma had 4 children, John Duncan b 1869 in IL, d 1954 in IA, Margaret - never married, Louise - never married, and Jane (Jen). In the 1880 census for LaSalle Co IL he is listed as J.D. McKenzi =e with Emma McKenzie, and the 3 oldest children.

I have only looked at Knox Co in OH and not at Mahoning Co because the family seemed to stick pretty close to Mt Vernon, and stayed pretty much with the Catholic Church. When Margaret's husband died in 1829 in Knox Co she remarried a Knox Co man and stayed in the area until she died. She & her new
husband did not raise Mary, Joseph and John however......she "farmed them out" to other family/families because the new husband did not want to raise them......according to family legend.

John and Sarah McKenzie are in the 1850 Ohio census, Schedule I - Free Inhabitants in 1st Ward of Mt Vernon, Knox Co, the page number is difficult to read but I think it is page 233. John & Sarah are on lines 39 & 40. On June 6 someone else in Knox Co told me that John McKenzie married Sarah 1 Aug 1849, by E.T.Brown min. She died 31 July 1852, age 20 yr, 3 mon, 11 days buried Moundview Cem. Mt Vernon, OH.

Marriage # 2 = Caroline Southwick 1 Feb 1853 by Fr. Julius Brent.

Old family letters say that he was married twice.....but they may not have known of #2. John and Emma Moreland had 4 children, all born in IL. My grandfather was the oldest of the 4, and he was born in 1869. John & Emma died and are buried in Ottawa, LaSalle Co. IL.

Description: I don't think that Nathaniel died in Fayette Co, Ill. In a summary of Knox Co, Oh. Common PleasCourt Minutes, 1829 his probate was listed on p. 130. When i wrote for a copy of his estate proceedings, the clerk of probate court wrote that the book had disappeared from her office. The summary said that he was dead by 8 Sept 1829 when his brother Moses applied to be the administrator and Gabriel, the appraiser.

I need to make a correction to my last email. Per the St. Luke's church records, Sarah McKenzie (dtr of Nathaniel McKenzie & Maria Dial) was BORN on 11 Aug 1832, but not baptized until 11 Mar 1833. The records say it was after Nathaniel's death. So he must have died sometime in 1832/1833.

But, review the information that the author received from Bob McKenzie in July, 2016:

With no wish to "muddy" anyone's mind concerning Gabriel D. McKenzie's brother Nathaniel, I'm offering the following material to clarify some question on his widow's (Mary Dial McKenzie) child, Sarah Ann McKenzie, also known as Sarah Ann Lybarger or Maranda Lybarger. Based on what other researchers have offered, we likewise assume that Nahaniel was the son of Gabriel McKenzie and Ann Maddox (Mattox).

From John H. Doty's 1977 compilation Pioneer Families of Colonial America, p. 208, Doty states the following:

"Nathan McKinsey died in Pleasant Twp., Knox Co., Ohio on or about 9-3-1829. Dr Wm L. Brooks made his last visit on 8-26-1829. Nathan had brothers Samuel, Moses, Aaron, Gabriel, & a sister Elizabeth (all italics mine) who m John S. Logue an older brother of James Logue - 3l7. Nathan signed a note to Baptist Mattingly for $5.31 on 8-11-1829. Moses McKinsey paid $6.00 on 10-5-1829 for Nathan's coffin."

On page 209 of the same compilation, Doty writes:

"See Probate Court Records of Knox Co., Ohio for estate settlement of Nathan McKinzie. Box 42, 697--Isaac Dial was appointed guardian of Rachel McKinzie, orphan of Nathan McKinzie on 10-17-1829. George Dial Jr & Peter Sheffer were appointed bondmen. Maria Dial McKenzie was listed as mother. See Vol 9, p 188--a Bill of sale & a list of property used by widow was made on 10-2-1829, Bk k, p 87 & Bk 38, p 66 or # 38-66. Inventory was filed on 3-12-1836, Bk B, p 375. Estate records--Bk 1, p 368, 9-8-1829 appointed Mary McKensey & Moses McKinsey administrators of the estate of Nathan McKensey. Isaac Dial & Gabriel McKinsey were appraised for bail."

"Nathan McKenzie & Mary Dial had at least one child, maybe two--see 1840 census. Rachel McKensey, b 3-22-1828 in Knox Co., Ohio & d 11-20-1906 St. Elmo, Ill cemetery."

"Marie (Mary) Dial McKenzie next man was Andrew Lybarger, son of Old George Lybarger (d1830). From this union one child was born--Sarah Ann (Maranda) Lyrager was born 10-20-1832 in Knox Co., Ohio & d in Morris Twp., Sumner Co., Kan on 2-11-1896. She was baptised on 3-11-1833 at St. Luke's Catholic church, Danville, Ohio as Sarah Ann McKinsey."

I've reproduced Doty's material exactly as it is in his compilation except for the bold print emphasizing Gabriel D. McKenzie's brothers and sister. Hopefully this will help other researchers baffled by the matter of a second daughter born to Nathaniel and Mary (Dial) McKenzie after his demise in 1829. But I must caution that I have not verified everything Doty presents.

Notes for GABRIEL MCKENZIE:

As a matter of record, this Gabriel McKenzie, his brother Aaron, and two of their sisters, Catherine and Elizabeth, married four members of the Daniel and Honora (Logsdon) Logue family. Catherine married Ralph E. Logue, Elizabeth married John Smith Logue, Aaron married Mary E. Logue, and Gabriel married Nancy Logue. By the time Honora (Logsdon) Logue and Daniel Logue died, she in 1844 and he in 1851, Elizabeth (McKenzie) Logue had also died, and John Smith Logue had remarried. In select papers regarding the estate of Daniel Logue, both Mary (Logue) McKenzie and Nancy (Logue) McKenzie are mentioned. This information appears in John H. Doty's "Pioneer Families of Colonial America," Copyright 1977, on pages 188, 202-203.

From the legal description of real estate mentioned in estate papers of Gabriel McKenzie's son Lewis McKenzie, Gabriel and Nancy (Logue) McKenzie were grantors of "the North West Quarter of the North West Quarter of Sec 19, Township 8, North Range 4, East of the 3rd P.M., containing 45 and 90/100 acres through a warranty" to Lewis McKenzie and his wife Normanda (Logue) McKenzie, the grantees. This particular land is located near Moccasin, IL.

For those who enjoy family stories, one legend exists that Gabriel would walk from his farm house near Moccasin to Effingham every year to pay his real estate taxes. On his last trip, it is said that he only made it part of the way and was forced to rest. Eventually, he was brought home by some neighbors. Legend also has it that he regularly walked from his farm near Moccasin to Saint Bonaventure Church, three miles north of St. Elmo, IL., so that he could attend Mass. Seemingly, Gabriel was a religious person. In the entry made of his death and burial on February 17, 1884, on page 160 of Volume I of the parish records for St. Bonaventure now maintained at St.Clare's Church in Altamont, IL, the priest at that time wrote, "Today, I buried Gabriel McKensey. He was a very pious man."

Gabriel died on February 15, 1884, and one assumes that he is buried in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, next to the church he loved to attend. In an obituary prepared about Gabriel's son Lewis McKenzie, the journalist at that time related that another of Gabriel's sons, John McKenzie, was the very first person to be buried in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Regrettably, no markers indicate the location of either person's grave. Gabriel's wife preceded him in death a little over 5 years earlier.

Gabriel married Nancy Ann Logue on 29 Apr 1824 in St. Luke's Catholic Church, Danville, Knox County, Ohio. Nancy (daughter of Daniel Logue and Honora (Oner) Logsdon) was born on 16 Mar 1803 in Allegany County, Maryland; died on 14 Dec 1878 in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois. James married Hester Sapp on 22 May 1830 in Danville, Knox County, Ohio. Hester (daughter of George Sapp and Catherine Arnold) was born about 1805; died on 18 Oct 1881 in Fayette County, Illinois. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Joshua McKenzie is referenced in Equity Case No. 734, Allegany County, Maryland Courthouse records as being the (deceased) brother of Moses McKenzie, Jr.

His birthdate came from the genealogical archives of Col. G.T. MacKenzie (Ret.), who began his research in 1929. But per the research of Ray Leidinger, he writes: St. Patrick's Church, Cumberland, Maryland. :Joshua McKenzie died July 13, 1845, near Cresaptown, age 60." If he was 60 at the time of his death as reflected in this church record, it would mean his birth date was 1785 (not 1795), which would fit better with Elizabeth Winter's DOB. In a letter from Ray Leidinger to Michael A. McKenzie dated December 21, 2012.

Also, on 12/31/1824, Joshua and Elizabeth sold to John Porter of John the estate of the late George Winter Book M Folio 570 Allegany County, Maryland records.

More research needs to be done as to where he was born - Maryand or Pennsylvania. There is an Ancestry record in US and International Marriages 1560-1900 which lists Jesse's birthplace as being Pennsylvania.

Jesse McKenzie is listed in the Census of Allegany County, Md in 1850 as being 59 years old. His wife, Catherine, is listed as being 58 years old. They had two children living with them, Lyttleton and Ellen Jane, who are believed to be children of their daughter Jane and her husband Wesley Burton according to the research of Col. Gabriel T. MacKenzie.

Jesse McKenzie is listed in the 1860 Census of Allegany County, Maryland, page 193 as being in the 6th District. His age is stated as 68. Catherine was still alive and her age is reflected as being 68.

Jesse McKenzie is referenced in Equity Case No. 734, Allegany County, Maryland Courthouse records as being the brother of Moses McKenzie, son of Moses McKenzie (b. 1760).

In 1848 a Complaint was filed in the Court of Equity of Allegany County, Maryland by the brothers and sisters of Moses McKenzie, (died 1838), son of Moses McKenzie (b. 1760), requesting that a parcel of land (known as the "Western Road") left by Moses when he died intestate in 1838 be equitably partitioned. This was the same parcel of land that was conveyed to Moses McKenzie (Moses McKenzie father b. 1760)) by Daniel Shriver, Jr. on September 13, 1812 and otherwise referred to in that deed as the "Western Road" property. The equity case lists all of Moses (died 1838) brothers and sisters and their spouses and siblings where applicable. Jesse McKenzie is listed in the Complaint and received a share of the proceeds when the land was sold.

In 1866 another Equity Complaint was filed in the Court of Equity of Allegany County Case No. 1604, Maryland by the heirs of Jesse McKenzie seeking the equitable partition of land left by Jesse McKenzie (b. 1791) when he died intestate. The Complaint references the children of Jesse McKenzie, including Benjamin Franklin McKenzie, who was living on the land at the time the action was filed. The case lists all of the children of Jesse McKenzie and also notes that Jesse’s wife, Catherine had passed away in 1864. Ultimately, the land was ordered to be sold by the Court and the proceeds distributed to the various heirs

Moses McKenzie, Jr. is mentioned prominently in Equity Case No. 734 in Allegany County, Maryland. He died intestate in approximately 1838 in Wheeling, Virginia as evidenced by interrogatory responses from various relatives contained within the proceedings of the Equity Case. His brothers and sisters are mentioned in the case as well as their husbands and their offspring. There is no mention of a wife of Moses or of any children. Based upon the manner in which the Law of Descent and Distribution work in most states, since Moses' brothers and sisters are mentioned (and their offspring), and since no wife or children of Moses are mentioned, you can conclude that he did not have any, or at least none survived him or left any offspring who survived him.

He definitely is referred to in the Equity Case as Moses McKenzie, Jr. (emphasis added) with the Junior indicating that his father was a Moses also. Moses, Jr., who is referenced in the Equity Case, also had brothers named Jesse and Joshua, just as his supposed father Moses (b 1760) did. It would seem that the Moses referenced in the Equity Case is not the same individual as Moses (b 1760), but rather the son of that particular Moses. We know that Moses (b 1760) married Sarah Ann McKenzie. We also know that Moses (b 1760) died in Cresaptown, Maryland in 1824. Consequently, the Moses whose property was involved in the Equity Case in 1848 could not have been the same Moses who married Sarah Ann McKenzie and died in 1824.

In August 2015, Sue King wrote to the author and conveyed the following information: “I suggest the following additional information for Moses McKenzie d1838. The 1830 Census for Allegany County, MD records a "Moses W Kinsey Jr" which I think is a transcription error for Moses McKinsey Jr (d1838). In this record there was only one male listed that could be the head of household and he was age 20-29 or born between 1801 and 1810. I am suggesting this record is for the Moses McKenzie d1838 as it appears that his mother Sarah born c1765 was living with him in 1830. Since it appears Moses McKenzie d1838 did not have surviving children, the Female age 30-39 was likely one of his sisters with her children. If you find this information useful, feel free to use it. I have been helping a lady join DAR and the lineage goes through Margaret McKenzie, daughter of Moses b1760, and wife of John Jeffries. I believe John Jeffries died after 1848 and Margaret and her children moved to Ohio after 1850. Margaret and her children were recorded in the 1850 Census in Allegany County, MD. I found Margaret living in the 1870 Census with her son Jesse Jeffries in Circleville, Pickaway Co, OH. I did not find Margaret in other records after 1870. In trying to find the death date for Margaret, I found death records in OH for sons Michael d1906 , John William d1910 and Jesse d1917. I did not research her daughter Margaret or find conclusive information for her son Thornton.”

The information set forth below was submitted by Richard (Dick) MacKenzie on December 5, 2013:

All: Did some more checking re Henry W. family, and it appears that the 2nd marriage to Sara Easley is in question. According to whomever submitted the information for Find-A-Grave, Sarah Huntsman McKinzie is buried with her husband Henry W. McKinzie in Rock Creek Cemetery, Douglas Co., KS (see attached, her stone shows just Sarah E. McKinzie, best I can tell), she died 1 Sep 1871, he 2 Jun 1882. They were married in Estill Co., KY 29 Jan 1824 (which makes the March 1824 birth of first alleged child interesting.) Therefore, maybe she did not die in IL in 1837, and he had only one spouse. The Sarah who appears with him in the 1850, 60 & 70 Census records was born in KY, as was Sarah Huntsman.

Also in that cemetery are sons Thomas Jefferson McKinzie (8 Apr 1834-5 Nov 1870) and Absalom McKinze (8 Jan 1827-14 Jun 1891) and daughter Mahala Martha McKenzie Brooks (11 Apr 1842-7 Apr 1924), w/o James H. Brooks. I think this daughter is shown in various documents as Margaret, Mahala and Mary, but they in fact all appear to be the same person.

Mary was the daughter of Daniel Logue and Honora Logsdon. She married Aaron McKenzie 29 May 1820. Aaron died 25 May 1840 and is buried at St. Luke's, Danville, Knox Co, OH. They had 9 children: Sebastian, James, Aaron, Honora, Maria (Mary), Daniel W., Rachel Susanna, John Baptist and Cyphrian McKenzie.

Obituary
Effingham Democrat (Effingham, IL) Thursday, December 19, 1878

"An old lady, named McKenzie, who was visiting a daughter here died suddenly Saturday morning. She also has relations living near Moccasin. Her remains were buried Sunday afternoon at the Catholic cemetery."

About Nancy (Logue) McKenzie, very little of any factual nature is known other than her ancestry. However, in terms of family stories, according to the late Lewis Rhodes, his great-grandmother Nancy once owned a pet cow that allowed no one but this woman to milk her. From a family story that Lewis often heard, at one time his great-grandmother Nancy became ill. Apparently, the cow would not cooperate and allow anyone to milk her. It was quickly decided that Lewis's mother, Nancy (McKenzie) Rhodes, grandaughter of Nancy Logue McKenzie, should put on her grandmother's clothes, and then the cow, recognizing the scent of its owner, would hopefully permit Mrs. Rhodes to milk her. As a joke on the cow, the deception evidently worked until Nancy (Logue) McKenzie recovered sufficiently to resume her daily task.

Nancy (Logue) McKenzie died on Saturday, December 14, 1878. According to the vital statistics cards at the Effingham IL County Court House, she died at approximately 7:00 a.m. at 74 years, 8 months, 19 days; the cause of her death was typhoid fever.

Records at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Effingham reveal that Anna McKeansey, whose husband was Gabriellis McKeansey, was buried from St. Anthony on December 15, 1878.

Nancy married Gabriel D. McKenzie on 29 Apr 1824 in St. Luke's Catholic Church, Danville, Knox County, Ohio. Gabriel (son of Gabriel Jr. McKenzie and Ann Maddox) was born on 22 Dec 1801 in Allegany County, Maryland; died on 15 Feb 1884 in Moccasin, Effingham County, Illinois. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
