- From Ray Leidinger June, 2021: According to a cousin, Lucy G. Wagner, who I interviewed March 20, 2014, Howard was transferring from a larger ship to a landing craft when he was killed. His body was never found. Lucy is still alive at 95!

Killed at Anzio: Reported missing in action since January 22, 1944, during the invasion operation againsy Anzio, Italy, Howard D. Shepherd, has been declared dead by the Navy Department. A former Celanese worker, the 19 year old sailor was the son pf Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Shepherd of Cresaptown. Besides his parents, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Mildred Beauchamp, Mrs. Madeline Cox, Cumberland; Mrs. Leola Metz, Baltimore; Betty, Doris, Dorothy, Charles, Willard and Dickie Shepherd, all at home.
