Notes |
- WESTERNPORT — R. Heber Poland, 60, manager of the Devon Club at Luke the past 30 years and long prominent in Western Maryland sporting circles, died suddenly early today at his home, 411 Maryland Avenue. Mr. Poland worked as usual yesterday and appeared to be in his usual good health when he left the club at 10 o'clock last night. Shortly after he had retired at midnight, his wife was disturbed by a slight noise and, turning on the light, found him unconscious. He died before a doctor reached the home. Mr. Poland became widely known in the 1930's as the promoter and matchmaker of amateur boxing shows and tournaments sponsored by the Devon Club. He was also an ardent hunter and angler. One of the organizers and charter members of the Westernport-Luke Lions Club, he was a native of Guard, Md., and a son of the late James Thomas and Norah Lillian (Guard) Poland. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, Piedmont, and a partner in the Maybury-Poland Realty Company, Westernport. Besides his wife, Mrs. Katherine (Crowe) Poland, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary Kay Poland, at home; a brother, Raymond Poland, Dayton, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Harris, Westernport. The body is at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, where services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p. m. by Rev. Robert E. Cassell, pastor of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Philos Cemetery. The Cumberland Evening Times, December 10, 1954
