Notes |
- Earl Crowe, the 46-year-old La Vale man given a new lease on life last March by a piece of plastic tubing, died this morning at Allegany Hospital where he had been a patient since Saturday. Seventeen months ago, Mr. Crowe, a pipe fitter, began to slowly starve. A local physician diagnosed his trouble and sent him to a specialist in Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, There, a section of cancerous gullet was removed and was replaced with a plastic tube in a rare and delicate operation. The operation was the subject of a series of pictures, in Life Magazine July 9, 1951. Members of his family said the operation was a success and he could eat normally three weeks after the tube had been inserted. But the cancer spread to other sections of his body and caused his death. He was born in Avilton the son of Isaac Walter Crowe and the late Minnie (Robeson) Crowe. He was married to the former Helen Catherine Klosterman of LaVale. Besides his father and wife, he is survived by one brother, Wilmer D. Crowe, LaVale; a half brother, Hilary George Michaels, Detroit; and five sisters, Mrs. Leda Krause and Mrs. Mae Biller, both of this city; Mrs. Pearl Brooks, Lake Milton, Ohio; and Mrs. Jessie Evans and Mrs. Datha Evans, Brookfield, Ohio. The body will remain at the Hafer Funeral Home. Services will be he!d at 9 a. m. Saturday in SS. Peter and Paul Church with Rev. Louis Glantz, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The Cumberland Evening Times, January 23, 1952
