    • Joseph J. O'Malley, 88, of Reno, Nevada, died after a long illness December 23, 2011, at Civista Medical Center, LaPlata. Mr. O'Malley was a long-time federal government attorney. Born October 24, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward Leo O'Malley and the late Mary Catherine Moran. He lived in the Washington, D.C. area for 30 years and raised his family in Takoma Park until moving to Los Angeles in 1981 and later to Las Vegas and Reno. His successful career as an anti-trust lawyer began in 1957 after he graduated from Georgetown University Law Center. He joined the U.S. Department of Justice's anti-trust division that year. In 1965 he was hired as associate chief counsel for the Comptroller of the Currency Office where he tried bank merger cases across the country and appeared several times before the U.S. Supreme Court. He moved over to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as assistant director of its Bureau of Competition, a job he held from 1968 to 1976, when he retired from the federal government. While with the FEC, he handled the Kennecott Copper-Peabody Coal Company divestiture, which at the time was the largest divestiture after judgment in history. In 1976 he was hired by the Los Angeles firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker. He retired from the law firm at 70 and later moved to Las Vegas, where he was admitted to the Nevada bar and established a small private practice. He later moved to Reno. He was admitted to the District of Columbia, California, Nevada, Supreme Court and federal bars. Mr. O'Malley was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Reno at the time of his death. From 1961 to 1962, he had served as Grand Knight of the Washington Council 224 chapter of the Knights of Columbus and later as the District of Columbia state deputy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Monsignor Edward O'Malley, and his first wife, Helen A. O'Malley. He is survived by his children, Patricia A. O'Malley of Germantown, Katie O'Malley-Simpson and her husband Thomas R. Simpson Jr. of LaPlata, Sharon R. O'Malley and her husband Shawn Anderson of College Park, Edward J. O'Malley of Germantown, Joseph J. O'Malley Jr. and his wife Lyndsay of Ijamsville, and J. Christopher O'Malley of Reno; grandchildren Matthew and Molly Simpson, both of LaPlata, and Robert O'Malley of Germantown. Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Dec. 28 at Raymond Funeral Home, LaPlata. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bryantown. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. The Rev. Rory J. Conley will officiate. Pallbearers will be Thomas R. Simpson Jr., Matthew Simpson, Joseph J. O'Malley Jr., J.
