Ward, Mary Ellen, "Sister Mary Alonzo 0. P.", born Feb. 26, 1885, entered the Dominican Religious order in 1912, received the habit in 1913 and pronounced her vows on July 10, 1914, according to Dominican Archival files. Sister Alonzo served at Saint Peter, Holy Name and Saint Anthony Schools, Steubenville; Saint Francis de
Sales and Blessed Sacrament, Newark; Saint Mary, Lancas¬ ter; Saint Thomas, Columbus; Saint Claire, Grosse
Points, Mich., and Saint William, Saint Thomas, Saint Brendan and Saint Lawrence in the Pittsburgh Diocese. From 1943-44 Sister Alonzo served as an instructor at Glendale, Ohio, for the Home Missioners. Her "two years there were unique. She was assigned as Superior of a group of our Springs Sisters to assist some young women with the task of founding a fledging community of Sisters designed to assist the poor in the area. By her loving care and direction, Sister Alonzo was held in admiration and gratitude by these young women." Sister also served as infirmarian at Saint Mary of the Springs, and as seamstress at the Dominican House of Studies in Chicago. Since 1958 she had been confined to the comunnity infirmary at Saint Mary of the Springs. On Feb. 1, 1963, Sister Alonzo was called to the Lord.
Her Solemn Requiem Masss was offered Feb. 4, 1963, at Saint Mary of the Springs Convent Chapel, with burial in
the Community Cemetery.
