Notes |
- A national miner was fatally injured when run over by a Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad coal train in sight of his home and five others were injured in two automobile accidents last night. The miner, who died at Miner's Hospital, Frostburg, at 11:15 p.m., a few hours after being hit, was Gibson Matthews, 41. A miner at coal mine 17 of the Consolidation Coal Company located in Klondike, Matthews had spent the afternoon away from home and was on his way back, taking a commonly used shortcut along the railroad tracks, when he was struck. His left leg was amputated below the knee. A train crew called a Frostburg ambulance to take Matthews to the hospital. Matthews is survived by his mother, Mrs. Viola Matthews, of Pekin; his wife, Mrs. Stella Crawford Matthews, and four children, Pvt. Gibson DeWayne Matthews, Camp Edwards, Mass.; LaVerne, Joan, and Dale, at home.
