- Mr. Ernest Joseph "Blaine" McKenzie, 77, of Boone Avenue, Frederick, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at home. He was the husband of the late Ginny McKenzie, who preceded him in death on May 18, 2002.Born Jan. 27, 1927, in Myersdale, Pa., he was the son of the late Leo Mark McKenzie and the late Margaret Marie Bare Gross.Mr. McKenzie joined the U.S. Army on April 16, 1945. He proudly served his country and was assigned to Co. C, 19th Repl Bn 5th Regiment. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he re-enlisted with a new assignment with Co. A, 29th Infantry Regiment. His decorations and citations include Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal.He retired from the Frederick County Board of Education in the late 1980s. He was a member of the American Legion Post 11. He was a past member of the Chippewa Tribe 19, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the Moose Lodge 371.Mr. McKenzie enjoyed farming and working with his hands. He was a car enthusiast and avid race fan. He had an amazing ability to fix, build and/or re-build practically anything he touched.He is survived by his children, Leo Blaine McKenzie and wife Kay, and Harold Leroy McKenzie and wife Patsy, all of Knoxville, Donna Marie McKenzie-Crum and husband Todd of Frederick, and Norma Dean Runkles and husband Floyd of Mount Airy. Eight grandchildren, Sandra Runkles Cavanaugh, Teresa Tomasini, Tanya Flabbi, Kimberly Moore, Michael McKenzie, Ashley McKenzie, A1C Brad Crum of the U.S. Air Force and Emily Crum. Eight great-grandchildren, Amanda, Shannon, Taylor, Justin, Amanda, David, Briana and Baby Boy McKenzie due to be born in August. Two brothers, Oliver J. McKenzie and wife Bertha of Frederick, and Ernie Swanson and wife Lena of Port St. Lucie, Fla. One sister, Ruth Elaine Summers of Frederick; and one sister-in-law, Pauline Lawson of New Market. Two brothers-in-law, Bill Phillips of Brunswick and Buck Phillips of Knoxville also survive him.The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the funeral home. The Rev. Ronald E. Reeves, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Frederick, will officiate.Bearers will be Dennis, Mark and Michael McKenzie; Brad and Todd Crum, Timothy Phillips and Roy Summers.Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.
