WESTERNPORT, Md. — Belva Louise McKenzie, 85, of Westernport, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at Moran Manor Nursing Home. Born April 5, 1923, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Catherine (Glotfelty) Michael. Her husband in 1979, Clifton McKenzie, and also her first husband in 1954, Shelby Ritchie, and a brother, Walter Michael, preceded her in death. Belva graduated from Grantsville High School and earned her Registered Nurses’ degree at Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Cumberland. Putting her career on hold, Belva became a devoted homemaker, raising five daughters before continuing with her nursing career. Belva was a caring and compassionate nurse at Potomac Valley Hospital, where she worked until retirement. Religion was an important part of Belva’s life. She was an active member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Westernport, where she attended regularly before becoming homebound. Belva valued the friendships of those she had worshiped with and looked forward to visits from Pastor Sally, as Mom considered her one of her own. Belva’s life was centered around her family. Nothing made her happier than everyone getting together at her house. We will cherish the many happy memories that we embrace. Besides her family, she loved flowers, especially pansies and houseplants. She also enjoyed creating delicious meals for her loved ones. She made beautiful quilts, afghans, rugs and needlework, which she generously gave as gifts to her children and grandchildren to treasure. Belva was a wonderful role model for her daughters. She endured many struggles, yet maintained a strength that only few possess. We are fortunate to have grown up with such a special lady, but we are even luckier to be able to call her “Mom.” She leaves behind her daughters, Susan Spencer and husband John of Columbia, Barbara Winebrenner and husband Darrell of Westernport, Linda Bender and husband Gene of Cumberland, Lois Taylor and husband Bob of Westernport, and Janet Marsh of Westernport. She is also survived by a brother, James Michael of Grantsville; her grandchildren, Laura McCanna, Trevor Kalbaugh, Jeff Winebrenner, Christopher Winebrenner, Kristen Bender, Stacy Metz, Josh Marsh and Jarad Marsh; her great grandchildren, Jack, Casey and Miles McCanna, Aubrey Kalbaugh, Brian Winebrenner, Gracie, Morisah and Landen Marsh and Taylor Clark. Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Westernport, on Saturday at 11 a.m., with Pastor Sally Bartling officiating. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.Pallbearers will be Jeff, Chris and Brian Winebrenner, Josh and Jarard Marsh, Trevor Kalbaugh, Chris Metz and Jonathan Worgan. The family requests memorial contributions to be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, the Activities Department at Moran Manor, the American Heart Association, the Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, or a charity of your choice.
