- SHORT GAP, WV — James C. Swaner, 92, of Short Gap, died Thursday at his residence. Born Oct. 3, 1908 in Keyser, he was the son of the late James Rees Swaner and Alice Edith (VanMeter) Swaner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Phyllis (Markle) Swaner; one sister, Ruby Pearl Swaner; two brothers, Everett G. Swaner and Donald Isaac Swaner; and two grandsons, William L. Swaner Jr., and Terry G. McDonald Jr. Mr. Swaner was a graduate of Bruce High School. He was retired from the Western Maryland Railway, having been a car inspector. Mr. Swaner was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church, Fort Ashby. He is survived by three sons, William Leroy Swaner, Cumberland, Md., Paul Leon Swaner, Ridgeley, and Robert Dale Swaner, Somerset, Pa.; one daughter, Linda Kay (Swaner) McDonald, Ridgeley; one sister Dorthy Marie Weakley, Ridgeley; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, PA., 202 Greene St., Cumberland. The funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m., with the Pastor Wesley Beahm officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
