MOUNT SAVAGE — Jean C. Smith, 88, passed away peacefully Monday, March 25, 2013, at the Golden Living Center surrounded by her loving family. She had been a resident there since 2008. Born May 6, 1924, in Mt. Savage, she was the daughter of the late James Ellsworth Crump and Agnes B. (Graham) Crump. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Smith, Sr.; brothers, William G. Crump and Robert L. Crump and granddaughter, Christina Jean Smith. She was a loving and loyal wife, mother, and grandmother and was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Savage. Jean is survived by sons, James D. Smith, Jr. and wife Shirley of LaVale, Paul T. Smith and wife Kathy of Montclair, Va.; daughters, Linda J. Hensley and husband Robert of Forest City, N.C., Martha D. Aman and husband Robert of Clearville, Pa.; sisters, Margaret Albright of Glen Burnie, and Catherine Rice of Bristol, Va.; and brother, James E. Crump of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Jason Smith and wife Lauren, Woodbridge, Va., Matt Smith, Montclair, Va., Kelli Smith, LaVale, Amy Bennett and husband James, Wiley Ford, and James Smith III, LaVale; eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at Hafer Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Wednesday, March 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. with funeral services following at 8 p.m. with Theresa Brion, Vicar of St. George’s Episcopal Church assisted by the Rev. Lydia Martin. As per Jean’s wishes, she will be cremated. Private family graveside services will be held later. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Jean’s memory to either the Golden Living Center Sunshine Club, 512 Winifred Rd., Cumberland 21502 or Office of Individual Giving, American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, Va. 22311.
