Miles Monroe was born in Biggs Settlement/Peterman,Monroe Co.,
Alabama. He was the son of Daniel Archibald and Elizabeth(McClure)(Matthews)Biggs. He was the grandson of Mitchell Biggs from Robeson Co. North Carolina, who later move to Monroe Co., Alabama. He had ten brothers and sisters. They were: Winfrey, Charity Ann, Sarah, Ethan, Effie, Tully James, William, Margaret, Caroline Elizabeth(Biggs) Chandler, and Elizabeth(Biggs)Dees.
Miles married Rebecca Effie McClure December 24, 1848 in Monroe, Co., Ala.. Their children were: Cicero Cincinnatti, Lycurgus Daniel, Janie Elizabeth((Biggs) Matthews, John, and Rebecca Jane. All of these children are buried in McNeil Cemetery.
Miles was described as 5'7" with sandy hair, fair complexion, and blue eyes. He reportedly died of influenza.
The family moved to Texas around 1855, and settled in the McNeil Community, Caldwell Co. as pioneering farmers.
Records show that Miles mustered into Company I in Gonzales Co., Texas on April 21, 1862, but according to family history he met, and joined up with Terry's Texas Rangers in Shreveport, La. He had gone there to buy a load of lumber to be used as flooring for his house. He put his wagon in storage and sent his oxen back home with a message,"I'll see you when the war's over".
He was discharged on June 24 or 29, 1862 in Chattanooga, Tennessee due to disability.
Sometime between 1860 and 1870, Miles went to Brazoria Co., Texas and brought Robert S. and Susan Henrietta Smith back with him to McNeil. Their parents had died. Robert"Uncle Bob" lived with Miles and Rebecca and Susan lived with the Harrison West family.
Rebecca died in 1891. Miles married Nancy Varnum in Gonzales, Texas December 29, 1892.
