Mrs. Ida Loflin of Minden will celebrate her 100th birthday Friday, but if you ask her age she will tell you "twice six, twice seven, twice 20 and 11". She stopped counting at 77.
She will be honored with a party Friday that will include her three daughters, one son, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren and all other family and friends who were not able to attend the party held at her church last week.
Although Mrs. Loflin has stopped counting birthdays, she is still planning exciting things to do. Her latest plan calls for an airplane trip to Alabama to visit her 95-year-old sister. She has never ridden an airplane before.
A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Mrs. Loflin has lived in the Minden area for much of her adult life. Her children calculate it has to be more than 73 years, because her oldest daughter was born in Minden. She has lived under the administrations of 20 American presidents, through the Depression and every war since the Spanish-American War. But she still manages to "eat pretty hardy", enjoy a Coca-Cola every afternoon and recite a stream of Bible verses at the drop of a hat. Sometimes a word in a verse might escape her, but if she puts her "mind on it" she can make up the difference. Once when asked the shortest verse in the Bible, Mrs. Loflin immediately said, "Jesus cried".
Mrs. Loflin likes to talk to frinds and other Meadowview residents and often regales them with tales of "old times". She especially likes to reminisce about her school days when there were no grades and "you just learned out of an old blue-backer speller". In her long lifetime Mrs. Loflin enjoyed going to church the most, she said. She is the only living charter member of the Jamestown Primitive Baptist Church in Jamestown, where "there is good preaching", she said.
