      Hi everybody,

This is a long post, so make yourself comfortable.

It's hard to know where to start with my Somerset County connections,
but my main genealogical interest in the county is the family of Patrick
and Elinora Lavinia MCKENZIE. Patrick (1813-1861) appears to be the son
of a Samuel MCKENZIE who died in 1843 and owned a store in Greenville Twp., PA.
Patrick was born either in Pennsylvania or Maryland (like
many people I'm researching who lived almost on the state line) and was
killed by a falling tree in 1861. He had seven children: Samuel Joshua
      (1842-1893), James Alexander (1844-1906), Martha Emmaline (1848-before
      1909), Thomas F. (1851-after 1909), Michael Aaron (1853-1914), Julius
      Sylvester (1854-1934) and Mary J. (1861-after 1909). In 1850, the
family lived in Southampton Twp., PA. Children Samuel, Thomas and Mary
stayed in Somerset County, but the others went west to Indiana and
Oklahoma. My direct line is through Michael Aaron MCKENZIE.

Patrick's wife was Elinora Lavinia Getty MCKENZIE (1823-1909), for lack
of a better name (almost every record I've seen gives her a different
name!). She was born 29 March 1823 in Allegany County, MD, and baptized
as Elinora MCKENZIE at Mt. Savage, MD, on 17 May 1823. Only her mother
Jane MCKENZIE (?-?) and aunt Elinora MCKENZIE (?-?) (the sponsor) are
named in the baptismal record; no father is mentioned. According to
Elinora Lavinia's death certificate, her father was John HUTZEL. I have
no further information about this HUTZEL-MCKENZIE connection and have
found no evidence for a marriage between John HUTZEL and Jane MCKENZIE.
Jane was the daughter of Samuel MCKENZIE (ca. 1751-1837) of Allegany
      County, MD.

Between January 1826 and June 1827, Jane MCKENZIE married James GETTY
(1805?-?). In 1850, James GETTY's family was living next door to
Patrick and "Lavina" MCKENZIE in Southampton Twp., PA. Based on this
census, the children are Joseph (1827-after 1880), William Reed
      (1832-1902), Eliza (1833-?), John (1837-?) and Mary (1848-?). One
anomaly on this census is that James GETTY's wife appears as
"Elizabeth," but Hoye's account of this family (in _Pioneer Families of
Garrett County_) makes no mention of a second marriage for James. Hoye
says the family (except William Reed GETTY) moved to Ohio in 1856. I've
found Joseph in Beach City, Stark County, OH, in 1880, but nothing
further on the rest of the family.

After Patrick's death, Elinora Lavinia MCKENZIE lived in Meyersdale, PA,
until her death on 12 August 1909. Her death certificate calls her
      Helena Nora Lovina MCKENZIE.

This family has led me into an interest in the MCKENZIES of Somerset
County, PA, and Allegany and Garrett Counties, MD. This is compounded
by the fact that Michael Aaron MCKENZIE married Loretta MCKENZIE
(1867-1904) about 1892 in LaGrange County, IN, and Loretta's ancestry
also leads back to the Somerset area. Loretta's father Joseph Christian
MCKENZIE (1837-1925) was from Maryland (though I have yet to confirm his
ancestors), and Loretta's mother Hannah FAIR (1842-1880) traces back to
Christopher FAIR (1769-1850) of Somerset County, PA, and Tuscarawas
County, OH. Hannah FAIR's mother Rachel Baker (1810-1892) may be the
daughter of Douglas Baker (1768-1850) and Anna Marie (or Mary Ann)
GARLITZ (1772-1852), but I have yet to prove this. Douglas Baker and
his family also went to Tuscarawas County, OH, from Somerset County, PA.
MCKENZIEs, FAIRs, BAKERs and GARLITZes all went to LaGrange County, IN,
and most or all of these families seem to have Somerset roots.

On the other side of my family, Mary E. NEFF (1815-1874) was born in
Somerset County, PA, daughter of Christopher NEFF (?-1824) and Elizabeth
SCHNEIDER (Snyder?) (?-1825). Mary E. NEFF married Peter Franklin (or
Freed) SHOWALTER (1816-1903) 9 November 1837 in Tuscarawas County, OH,
and they and their children wound up in LaGrange County, IN.

So that, in a very large nutshell, is about it. I would be interested
in exchanging info on these families with anyone else researching them.
I am indebted to Betty Smith for originally posting the obituary for
Elinora Lavinia MCKENZIE that got all this started, and for sharing
other helpful information and advice since then. Peg Adams has also
helped me with FAIR info from the midwest. Thanks!

      Best regards,

      Jennifer

Here is another post from Colleen Stanley Green from July 15, 2013 explaining why two of Joseph Christian Mckenzie's children were most llikely christened in maryland, even though they lived in Indiana at the time.

      Hi Mike,

Am I correct in assuming St. Michael’s Catholic Church is in Maryland?

First Joseph is married to Hannah Fair not Harriet. I do not have any Harriet McKenzies in my tree.
I got the Indiana birthplace from the census.
The 1870 census of Bethlehem Twp. Stank Co., Maryland
Joseph is born in Maryland, Hannah in Ohio, Charles E.(Ed Dad always called him) in Indiana, Loretta (spelled Lauretta
on the census) born in Indiana and Clarence born in Ohio.

The 1880 and 1900 census shows Loretta and Joseph born in Indiana.

Joseph McKenzie and Hannah Fair were married 27 Jan 1865 in Tuscarawas, Ohio per the World Family Tree.

      Joseph’s father, Samuel Francis McKenzie 1805 – 1885 and(wife Catherine Durbin 1805 – abt 1851) were in
Maryland when Joseph C., Samuel M., and Margaret were born. Charles was born in Pennsylvania and I
do not know where Clarence was born.

This is just a theory that is maybe. My grandparents, Thomas Stanley and Helena McKinsey were very devout
Catholics as were my parents, Joseph Stanley and Loretta Rady Stanley. My grandparents moved to Michigan
so the children could get a proper religious training as the priests came through Nebraska few and far between
visits. With this history and Joseph’s father still alive in Maryland there is the possibility that they went to
visit and while there had the children christened properly in a Catholic Church. That is assuming St. Michaels
is in Maryland. Does that make any sense to you?

Dad did not mention of them living in Maryland. Some in Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, and some in Michigan.
I am totally guessing at this but they were strict Catholics to the extreme, saying this I have no idea if
my Dad was christened in a church. Love these puzzles, especially when you find a piece to put into them.

      All the best,
      Colleen
