    Notes
    • Joseph is reflected in the 1900 census as living with his daughter, Loretta, and his son-in-law, Michael Aaron McKenzie in Millgrove, Steuben, Indiana.

The following information was sent to Michael A. McKenzie in June, 2013 by Beth Sooter. bsooter1@cox.net

The earliest records of the McKenzies, Thomas Wainright’s mother’s family, are Joseph O. McKenzie and Hannah Fair. b. 1842 d. 1880

Joseph is born January 1st, 1827 in Cumberland, Maryland. He died in 1876 and is buried in Brighton, Indiana. Legend has it he was a confederate soldier who skipped the draft and lived with relatives in Ohio. He had a brother named Charles .
Hannah is the daughter of John Fair, b. 1806 PA, d. 1881, LaGrange IN, and Rachel Baker, b. 1811 d. 1892. The Fairs moved to Ohio, after their 4th child, in 1834. They moved to LaGrange, Indiana after their 13th child in 1857. Hannah is the 6th of 13 children, 4 of whom died before the age of 3, another at the age of 13.

Joseph marries Hannah Fair in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on January 27th, 1865.
Together Joseph McKenzie and Hannah Fair have 6 children.
Charles Edward b.1865 d. 1940. marries Ida Johnson, b. 1877 d. 1973, together they have 4 children, see Mckenzie pictures pg 4, see Ida’s death notice in Mckenzie pictures pg. 6
Loretta b. 1867 marries Michael A. McKenzie, (a third cousin) in 1892, they needed a dispensation to
get married. Together they had 5 children
Clarence b. 1869 marries Mary and divorced in California.
Helena Agatha b. 1873 d. 1918 in Bertrand, Nebraska, buried there also. Helena marries Thomas Vincent Stanley and together they had 6 children.
Urban b. 1877, marries Fannie, b. 1898 d. 1978, see death notice in Mckenzie pictures pg. 6 together they had 3 children, one of which was Leo, who used to visit Thomas Wainright’s brother Joe in Cornville.
Samuel, b. 1879, marries Ethel Legg, b. 1874, who writes to Joe Stanl

In 1854, Kansas becomes a separate territory with the Kansas Nebraska Act.

In 1860, Michael McKenzie, a cousin, and future husband to Helena’s sister, Loretta, is growing up in Pennsylvania. His brother, Thomas, is listed as being deaf. Michael’s uncle John and William on his father’s side are also deaf. They are living with the family in Pennsylvania in 1860.

In 1862 the Homestead Act is approved.

In 1867, Nebraska becomes a state, Lincoln is the capital.

In 1870, Michael McKenzie is still at home, his brother and sister, who are deaf are at home also. Their father has passed away.
Joseph and Hannah appear on the 1880 census in Millgrove Township, Steuben County, Indiana, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 1 and Stanley maps pg.3. Joseph is a farmer.

There’s been some confusion on the date of Hannah’s death. It was originally thought she died just 3 months after Samuel’s birth. But the 1880 census was conducted on June 5th, 1880, and Samuel was 10 months old. Hannah must have died soon after, see Mckenzie censuses pg.1.

There’s also confusion on this census as to where Joseph’s parents were born. He claims he is born in Pennsylvania as were his parents, and Hanna claims she was born in Ohio, her father and mother born in Maryland. I think the census taker, for 1880, got their parent’s information reversed.

See picture of Helena and Loretta in Mckenzie pictures pg. 1

      Hannah passes away in 1880.

In 1880, there is a census taken specifically for those who are deaf, dumb and/or blind. The Mckenzie kids are listed, but with an unknown cause. There are two other children who are considered deaf-mutes, one as a result of ‘brain fever
and the other as a result of ‘scarlett fever’.
The Mckenzie children were listed as deaf at birth. Mary McKenzie, was sent to an asylum in Philadelphia, for 4 years a the age of 11 and discharged in 1875.
Interesting, on this supplement to the census, there is a list of children who are homeless. All under the age of 3 from two families. The father has died, the mother has not. The children were rescued from criminal surroundings.

In 1892, Helena’s sister, Loretta, marries her cousin, Michael. They had to get a dispensation from the church.

In 1895, Helena marries Thomas Vincent Stanley. Together they have 6 children.

      Clive b. 1896, marries Ruth Brown b. 1897, they have 2 children
Pauline, b. 12/2/1898 and died two days later on Dec. 14th.
James Maynard b. 1900, in Stuben Iowa, marries Helen Weeden, b. 1903
      Joseph b. 1903, marries Lorretta Rady, b. 1906 d. 1958
This is Lorraine Baily, Colleen Green, John and Pat Stanley’s father. We see them often.
      Kenneth b. 1906 in Wheeler NE, d. 1942, marries Mildred Joselyn b. 1907
Thomas Wainright, b. 1909 in Wheeler NE, d. 1981, marries Alberta Ginther.

In 1898, on the Millgrove, Indiana map, Helena is shown to own 20 acres adjacent to her father-in-law, James Stanley. James owns 40 acres, see Stanley maps pg. 7.

In 1899, Olds Motor Works, builds the 1st auto factory in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1900, Helena and her husband Thomas Vincent Stanley, are still living in Millgrove, Indiana.

On the 1900 census, Loretta, 32, Joseph’s daughter, and her husband Michael, 47, are in Millgrove Township, Steuben County, Indiana. Loretta claims she has had 5 children, 4 of which are living. She must have lost a child before this census, as there are 5 children again on the 1910 census. Michael is a farm laborer.
Together Michael and Loretta McKenzie have 6 children
      Mildred b. 1893
      Paul H. b. 1895 buried in Flanders
      Norris b. 1897
Johanna b. 1899 both buried in Brighton IN see Uncle Joe’s written history, pg. 8
      Child d. before 1910
      Bernard b. 1902

Joseph is living with his daughter Loretta, he is 63. He is a farmer and he claims he was born in Maryland, as were his parents, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 2

In 1900, Samuel, 20, Helena’s brother, is also in Millgrove Township. He is a boarder, going to school. He is living with Thomas and Eva Legg, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 3. Samuel ends up marrying Ethel Legg, but I cannot trace who her parents were. She is living down the road with Delmar and Harriet Webb, and she is listed as a 16 yr old S-in-law.

In 1900, Charles, 42, Joseph’s 1st son, is in Clear Creek Township, Wheeler County, Nebraska, with his wife Ida, 23. They have a boarder with them, James Winning, who is 13. Charles and Ida have just married, in the year 1900. They are resident #28 of 36 in Clear Creek, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 4,Mckenzie maps pg. 1. He is a farmer.
Together Charles and Ida have 3 children
      Hilder b. 1901
      Helena b. 1905
      Edwin b. 1908

In 1900, Urban, 24, Joseph and Hannah’s 5th child, is also in Clear Creek with his wife Fannie, 24, and their first child Willes, 6 mo. They are resident #5 of 36 in Clear Creek, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 5.
Together Urban and Hanna have 3 children
      Willes b. 1899 d. 1984, see headstone, Mckenzie pictures pg. 4
      Nettie b. 1903
      Leo b. 1905

Loretta, Joseph and Hannah’s 2nd child, has passed away between 1900 and 1910. In 1910, Mike, 57, lists himself as a widow, in Greenfield Township, LaGrange County, Indiana. He is a farmer on land he is renting. His older brother Thomas, 59, who is a carpenter, and younger sister Mary, 50, are living with him. Both his brother and sister are listed as deaf and dumb. They had to have moved here shortly before 1910, as their mother does not pass away until 1909. Mike has all the kids with him, Mildred, 17, Paul,15, (soon to be killed in WWI) Joanne, 13, Norris, 11, and Bernard, 8, see Mckenzie censuses pg 6. and Stanley maps pg. 3.

In 1910, Samuel McKenzie, 30, the last of Joseph and Hannah’s children is in Pleasant Township, Steuben County, Indiana with his wife Ethel, 27, and their two children. He is a mail carrier, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 7 and Stanley maps pg. 3.
Together Samuel and Ethel have 2 children
      Howard b.1903
      Wava b. 1906

In 1910, Charles, 45, Joseph and Hannah’s 1st child, is still in Clear Creek, Wheeler County, Nebraska with his wife Ida, 33, and their 3 children. He owns a farm, see Mckenzie census pg. 8.
In 1910, Urban, 33, and Fannie, 31, now own a farm in Bartlett Township, Wheeler County, Nebraska, with their 3 children, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 9

See Stanley and Mckenzie family in Mckenzie pictures pg. 2

In 1917, Urban owns a large piece of land, 360 acres, in Wheeler County, Nebraska, see Mckenzie maps pg. 2.
In 1917-8, we know from the Stanley history, that Urban Mckenzie’s sister, Helena, is in Bartlett Township, with her husband Thomas Vincent Stanley and their son Thomas Wainright. This is where Helena dies and is buried. They are with Margaret, Helena’s niece.

In 1918, Urban fills in a WWI draft registration card. Even though he is 42 years old, a farmer, of medium height and slender build, see Mckenzie pictures pg. 5

In 1920, Clarence, 49, Joseph and Hannah’s 3rd child, is in Chico Township, Butte County, California, with his wife Mary, 38, and their daughter Margaret, who is 15. At some point he is divorced.

In 1920, Samuel, 40, and Ethel, 37, are still in Pleasant Township, Stueben County, Indiana with their two youngest children. Samuel is still a mail carrier, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 10. Helena’s father, Joseph, now 83, is living with Samuel in Pleasant, Indiana. Samuel’s son, Howard, is a laborer in a shoe shop.

In 1920, Urban is still in Bartlett Township, Wheeler County, Nebrask

In 1927, Helena’s niece, brother Urban’s daughter, names her daughter, Helena.

In 1930, Urban, 52 and Fannie, 50, are in Ericson Township, Wheeler County, Nebraska, with their son Leo. Urban values his farm at $3,000, see Mckenzie censuses pg. 11.
In 1930, Samuel and Ethel are in Jamestown, Stueben County, Indiana.

In 1940, Charles, Helena’s brother dies. He was married to Ida, see Mckenzie pictures, later in life, pg. 4

In 1940. Urban’s son, Leo’s, wife dies in Oregon, leaving Leo with an infant son.

In 1942, Samuel McKenzie, fills in a draft registration card for WWII, even though he is 62 years old, 5’6 and 145 lbs. see Mckenzie pictures pg. 3.

Ida, Charles Edwards wife passes away in 1973, in Fremont, Nebraska.
