    • CUMBERLAND - John J. Coyle passed away on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at Western Maryland Health System. He was born May 6, 1921, in Cumberland, graduated from LaSalle High School, in 1939, and from Catherman's Business School. He served in the United State's Army during World War II at the Pentagon. Mr. Coyle began working in the family furniture business E.V. Coyle Furniture Company while in high school and spent most of his career as a business leader. He participated in many community and service activities. He was elected to two terms as Allegany County Commissioner and had a close relationship with Mayor and then Governor Schaefer. He worked with Governor Schaefer, Speaker Cas Taylor and others to complete the last sections of what is now Interstate 68. He was also instrumental in initiating the annual PACE reception and the initial Heritage Days. He was most proud of the construction of the Allegany County Nursing Home. Most important to him was his family. Mr. Coyle is survived by his wife of 74 blessed years, Rosemary McKenzie Coyle, to whom he was totally dedicated. He is survived by his remaining six children, Janet Ruhl, Patricia Zimowski, John J. Coyle Jr., and his wife, Susan Coyle, Dotti Stopher, William Coyle and Dennis Coyle and his husband, David Mallory. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His son Martin F. Coyle predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his siblings, James E. Coyle, Mary Rita Coyle Coleman and Edward V. Coyle, Jr.; sons-in-law, G. Randy Ruhl and Larry Stopher; and a grandson, Michael Patrick Coyle. Mr. Coyle was an active Roman Catholic and member of SS. Peter & Paul and St. Mary Parishes. Visitation will be at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake will be held on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at SS. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Shrine on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James E Coyle Jr., Bruce Coleman, Linda M. Coyle, William E. Coyle, Christian H. Coyle, and G. Randy Ruhl. The honorary pallbearer will be Amy Zimowski Beeman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions may be made in his memory to St. Anthony Place, Our Lady of the Mountains Roman Catholic Parish, 300 East Oldtown Rd Ste 2, Cumberland, MD 21502.
