John Henry Porter died near his home south of Macksburg after being shot accidentally by a 10-yr old boy at a turkey shoot. As reported in the Creston American, "the old gentleman was standing near the fire and the boy had the loaded gun in his hands. At its discharge, he fell-staggered, then fell, and died within a few moments, the contents of the gun entered the side near the left armpit, and, no doubt, penetrated the heart."
