Obituary
"The Beecher City Journal" (Beecher City, IL) Thursday, January 28, 1932(page 1)
"NONAGENARIAN CALLED"
"On January 21, 1932, Mrs. Katie M. Durbin passed to her reward at the home of her grandson, Thomas Tipsword, at the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 26 days."
"Katie Margaret McKenzie was born September 25, 1839 in Knox County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Gabriel and Nancy McKenzie and is the last survivor of that family. She was one of the community's oldest pioneers, having come with her parents at the age of 8 years and settled on a farm near Moccasin. In 1854 (sic) she was united in marriage to Benjamin Durbin. To this union eight children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband and seven children, four who died in infancy and three recently, namely Mary J., James O., and Amanda A. She leaves to mourn her departure one son, Joseph Frances (sic), also twenty one grandchildren, forty one great-grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends."
" 'Aunt Katie,' as she was commonly known, has lived practically all her life in this community and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Through these two months of illness she has born (sic) it patiently. She worked very hard all her life and suffered all in true Christian spirit. Even when the infirmities of old age began to weigh down upon her she was ever the good, kind, pleasant mother. All her life she has been a devoted Catholic and lived a noble Catholic life."
Funeral Service
"Funeral services were conducted at the Catholic Church north of St. Elmo at 11 o'clock A.M. Saturday by Father Walsh of Altamont. Interment was in the cemetery nearby."
"Among those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. Earl Shannon and daughter of Deland, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fortner, Mrs. Minnie Crisup (sic) and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tipsword, Mr. and Mrs. William Hostler (sic) and Mrs. Sally McKenzie of Monticello, Mrs. Saint Doty of Bement, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. Curt McKenzie, Mrs. Annie Stroble and Mrs. Geo. Zacha of Altamont."
