NELLIE WHITEFORT FUNERAL HELD HERE WEDNESDAY
NATIVE OF HOWARD'S POINT WAS MEMBER OF FIRST HIGH SCHOOL CLASS HERE
"Funeral services were conducted at the Brown funeral home here Wednesday for Mrs. Nellie Whitefort, who died Monday in the home of her great niece, Mrs. Kenneth Muma, who had cared for her in recent years. She was 78 years, two months, and 16 days old."
"Nellie B., daughter of Dr. D. W. and Abigail Watterman McKenzie, was born July 8, 1878, at Howard's Point, just west of St. Elmo. She grew to womanhood in this community and was a member of the first graduating class of St. Elmo high school."
"On Feb. 3, 1906, she was united in marriage with George R. Whitefort in St. Elmo. One son, George Webster, was born to them. He died August 12, 1921, at the age of 14 years."
"After the retirement of her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Whitefort moved to Florida. Her husband passed away in Miami April 3, 1952, and his body was brought back to St. Elmo for burial."
"Both Mr. and Mrs. Whitefort were members of the First Lutheran church in Dayton, Ohio, where they made their home until his retirement. They were also members of the Order of the Eastern Star in Dayton."
"After the death of Mr. Whitefort, Aunt Nellie, as she was affectionately called, made her home with Mrs. Muma in Vandalia, and last year she moved with Mr. and Mrs. Muma to their home in St. Elmo."
"During her failing years she was attended by Mrs. Muma and her brother-in-law, Dr. A. R. Whitefort."
"She is survived by two nieces: Mrs. Ethel Willms of St Elmo and Mrs. Ora McCollum of Kansas City; three nephews, Glen Hamrick of San Diego, Richard Sather of LaMesa, Calif., and Robert Whitefort of St. Elmo, and a niece, Mrs. Catherine Whitefort Barnes of Long Beach, Calif."
"The services Wednesday were conducted by Charles H. Nelson Jr., pastor of the First Christian church in St. Elmo. Burial was in the Whitefort family plot in Maplewood cemetery."
