      MARTINSVILLE

"B. L. Barr, long a resident and pioneer of our township, died last Saturday evening. His funeral took place Monday afternoon from Shiloh church, Rev. W. Mitchell officiating. Interment was in the Baird cemetery nearby. He leaves a wife {Compiler's Note--This wife was Eliza Coffey whom he married in 1902; after Brownlee Barr's death, she married a man named Boyer} and a family of grown children, besides grandchildren and great-grandchildren to mourn his loss. Thus the old pioneers pass away."

      BROWNLEE BARR

"Brownlee Barr was born in Knox county, Ohio, Octo. 25, 1825. He was married to Elenora McKenzie, Jan. 23, 1845. Twelve children were born to this union. Five children, three boys and two girls, died in infancy. Seven children of the family are living, and all were present to attend funeral services."

"Elenora Barr died July 4, 1901, aged 72 years, 10 months and 13 days. He was married to Eliza Coffey, June 14, 1902, who survives him."

"He moved to Clark county, Ill., in the fall of 1852 with his young wife and two little girls. They lived for some time in an old log school house until he cut the logs and built a house. In this cabin he lived for several years (and) then (he) built a better house. He was an industrious, hard working man, providing bountifully for his family. He was favored in living to see the larger part of his family grown to manhood and womanhood, married and settled in homes of their own. He was a great lover of his children, always glad to be in their company. He was devotedly fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, ever greeting them with a glad heart and cheerful smile, and constantly reminding them by the gifts so dear to the childish heart of the deep affection he had for them."

"He was highly respected for his many sterling qualities of manhood as well as for his bright, cheerful disposition, and was loved by all who knew him."

"About eighteen or twenty years ago he was converted and joined the M. E. Church South at Hopewell, but like many others he wandered away from the Savior he had received. However during the last two years there had been a marked change in his life. He became more attentive in worship at the house of God and was a diligent student of God's word in his home. For some time past he had been under the impression that something unusual was about to happen--he knew not what, and evidently in wisdom, was trying to prepare for any event."

"He joined the I. O. O. F. Lodge in Martinsville and lived a consistent member until he was called to part with the brotherhood and a host of friends to await the great day when all the dead shall be called forth to reap their reward."

"The I. O. O. F. lodge took charge of the burial. The funeral services were held at Shiloh church, conducted by Rev. Walter Mitchell. After his brief talk they went to the Baird cemetery to pay the last tribute of respect."

Marriage Notes for ELLENORAH MCKENZIE and BROWN BARR:
      News Story
"Clark County Democrat," (Marshall, Clark Co., IL) January 29, 1896 (no page listed)

"Mr. and Mrs. Brown Lee Barr and wife (sic--Mrs. Brown Lee Barr was the wife) celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Thursday. Children, relatives and friends came in and enjoyed a sumptuous repast and gave them several nice presents. For 50 years they have traveled hand in hand down the aisle of time and now are enjoying good health and all the comforts of life. The merry crowd departed after wishing them another half century of partnership happiness. Mr. Barr is 71 and Mrs. Barr 68."

{Compiler's Note--In 1896, the Thursday referred to by the Clark County Democrat reporter was January 23, 1896. According to family records, Brown Lee Barr and Elnorah McKenzie were married January 23, 1845, not January 23, 1846. It appears the traditional date is incorrect, the Barrs were a year late in celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, or the date on the newspaper is incorrect)
