- FROSTBURG — Thelma E. Raley, 98, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 4, 2019, at WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on June 16, 1920, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Grace (Michaels) McKenzie and the late John William McKenzie. In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond A. Raley in 1985 and all of her siblings with the exception of one brother, Francis (Dick) McKenzie of Finzel. Thelma retired from The Cumberland Blouse Factory and was a member of Divine Mercy St. Michael Catholic Church, Frostburg. Thelma was an avid reader. She also loved to walk; walking two miles a day until she got ill at the age of 93. In 2001, at the age of 81, she won a gold medal at the Maryland Senior Olympics. She set a state record in the 80-85 age group for the mile walk. However, the greatest joy of her life was spending time with her family. Surviving are sons, Raymond E. Raley and wife, Sue of Smithsburg, and Stanley J. Raley and wife, Linda of Frostburg. Also surviving are grandchildren Mike Raley, Scott Raley, Jeff Raley, all of Frostburg, as well as Penny McKenzie of Mercersberg, Pa., Kimberly Minnick of Mt. Airy, Vicki Raley of Hagerstown, and Jason Monts of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Thelma is survived by eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave, Frostburg, on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service at the funeral home with Deacon Harold Bradley officiating. Interment will be in Finzel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Raley, Scott Raley, Jeff Raley, Jason Monts, Elmer Minnick, Natasha Dunn and Andrew Dunn. This is a note from Michael McKenzie to Sheryl Kelso in February, 2019 as we were trying to understand Thelma McKenzie Raley's obituary that had just been posted.
I see w/r/t Grace Virginia Michaels that she had three husbands, at least based upon what pops up at the top of the page when you search Ancestry for her. They were in order: George Leroy Jeffries, Charles E. Entler and John William McKenzie. The Charles Entler entry is probably why I originally had Thelma Elizabeth listed as Thelma Elizabeth Entler.
In the 1930 census for John William, Thelma is listed as Thelma Jeffers, step daughter.
In the 1920 census, Grace is listed as the wife of Charles E. Entler. There are 5 Jeffries children listed as stepchildren under them.
In the 1910 census, Grace is listed as the wife of Roy Jeffries. Two of the five Jeffries' children who had already been born are listed with them.
If you go by the various census documents, although Thelma is not listed on the 1920 document, Grace was married/living with Charles E. Entler at the time and was very pregnant. There is no date on that particular census page so based upon it alone, we do not know if Grace had delivered Thelma or was still pregnant.
I guess the final conclusion is that we'll need to go with what is listed in Thelma's obit, i.e. that her father was John William. Agree? But, I think I will place some notes on her home page.
Thoughts?
