FROSTBURG — Rose Marie “Rosie” (Mathews) Martirano, 68, of Frostburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center surrounded by her husband and daughters. Born May 1, 1942, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Alice (Conway) Cooley. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Robert and Nellie Mathews; and her sister, Carol (Cooley) Walters. A 1960 graduate of Girls Catholic Central, she worked at Liberty Trust Bank in downtown Cumberland until the birth of her first child at which time she became a full-time mom. Surviving are her husband of almost 45 years, Carl R. Martirano, Frostburg; two daughters, Maria Smith and husband John, Fort Ashby, W.Va., and Carla Cheshire and husband Jason, Fort Ashby; three grandchildren, Gabriella and Dylan Cheshire and Nicholas Smith, all of Fort Ashby; two brothers, Bill Cooley, Hagerstown, and Rick Cooley and wife Jane, Hagerstown; one sister, Marcia McColman and husband John, Chester, Va.; as well as several nieces, nephews, brothers-and sisters-in-law. At Rosie’s request, no visitation will be held. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Friday at 10 a.m. with Father Ed Hendricks officiating. Interment will be in Frostburg Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Martirano, Tony Martirano, John Smith, Jason Cheshire, Nicholas Smith and Jerry Zembower. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may direct donations to the Western Maryland Health System Schwab Family Cancer Center, c/o WMHS Foundation, PO Box 539, Cumberland, MD 21502.
