November 23, 2008, Cumberland Times-News ~ MOUNT Savage — JoAnn Burkett, 43, of Mount Savage, transferred into eternal life on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer, surrounded by her family at her home. She was born March 22, 1965, in Cumberland. She was the daughter of William and Carole Burkett, of Mount Savage. She will be reunited with her little precious nephew, Luke William Armstrong Burkett; paternal grandparents, Irvin and Leola Burkett; and her maternal grandfather, James P. Frankenberry. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are one sister, Cindy McGill and husband Tommy, of Centerville, Pa.; two brothers, William and wife Denise, and Michael James and wife Dawn, of Mount Savage; four nephews, Jeramie Simpson and wife Amanda, of Hagerstown, and Michael, Kaden and Kanon, of Mount Savage; seven nieces, Erica, of Rhode Island, Ashley and Emily, of Centerville, Pa., Jessica, Rachel, Kylie and Kelsie, of Mount Savage; one great-nephew, Mason William, of Centerville, Pa.; two great-nieces, Emma Belle and Madison Elizabeth, of Hagerstown; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Joann worked for Fechheimer Brothers company in Grantsville and also at the Girls Group Home in Cumberland on the weekends. JoAnn loved playing scrabble with her family. She enjoyed decorating her home and being around all her animals, camping with her family, traveling to special shopping places in Pennsylvania, and going out to eat too. She loved to go on picnics and swimming with her family. She crocheted many beautiful afghans and gave them all away. JoAnn’s family wishes to thank all the families, friends, churches and pastors for all their love and support, the prayers, cards, donations and dinners, and visits to see JoAnn. She could not believe that so many people cared so much about her. She was really blessed. Her family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to all her doctors and nurses at the Oncology Center and her home hospital caregivers for their wonderful care in helping JoAnn throughout her illness. Family and friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. Pallbearers will be her cousins, Timmy Burkett, Denny Martin, Jeff Boor, Randy Aidridge, Doug Frankenberry and Charlie Frankenberry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests your expressions of sympathy be made in JoAnn’s name to the LaVale United Methodist Church, 565 National Highway, LaVale, MD 21502 or to the WMHS-Regional Cancer Center for research on ovarian cancer.
