Winston Ralph Devore, 84 years old, closed his eyes at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, 2021, and peacefully went to sleep at his home, 'The Big House,' in Ellerslie. His beautiful, loving wife, Rosalie McKenzie Devore, who he missed passionately for six and half years, welcomed him. They are reunited and their love story continues. Winston was the son of Ralph Emerson Devore and Agnes Mary Bohn Devore. He was the most amazing, magical, loving father to his three daughters, Diana Sindy (Gary Sindy), Denise Phillips, and Beth Devore. He was 'Pappy Winston' and the most generous, devoted, loyal and loving grandfather one could only dream of having to, Bethany McCoy (Alex), Stephanie Sindy (Seth), Cody Sindy (Caley), Chad Sindy (Melissa), and Logan Phillips. He proudly gained the title of great-grandfather to Lincoln Robert. Pappy was also overjoyed at the news that his family is growing and will be welcoming two summer babies. Winston was born on Dec. 4, 1936, and was raised in Ellerslie. He graduated from Mount Savage High School, 1954. He then served in the United States Army for two years. He met the love of his life in the small town of Mount Savage. He always said that she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He chased her until he caught her and there were married July 20, 1957. After returning home from the Army, his father, Ralph Devore, owner of Devore's Market, told him it was time to come to work. Winston poured his heart and soul into making Devore's Market one of the greatest family businesses. Winston kept the market going for 50 years. The market was a staple in the town and was more than a store to so many people. Shopping at Devore's was a full-service experience, from a complete range of groceries and fabulous meats to counseling from 'Dr. Winnie' and photos and stories lining the walls, it truly embodied a family business. Winston had the ability to make anyone laugh; he was a famous jokester. Throughout the years, Devore's Market employed many local people and everyone felt like family. It was the quaint place where 'everyone knows your name.' In the early years, Winston delivered groceries from house to house, ordering any item a customer would request. The biggest lesson he instilled in his employees was, 'The customer is always right.' Winston Devore worked tirelessly, seven days a week, long hours each day, to provide for his family and make the market a success. Winston is also survived by his two sisters, Jean Lehman and Sondra Giancoli; as well as a special niece, Paula Fuller, who he loved like a daughter; and a special nephew, Grant Cain, of whom he was so proud; and last but not least, his best friend, with whom he spent every evening, Darrell Lyons. The family of Winston will be celebrating his life, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Bible Church, Ellerslie. All safety protocols will be followed due to Covid-19. Masks and social distancing are required. We, his family, have suffered a huge loss, for this man was such a big presence in everything we did and every breath we took.
