Burkett, 87, of Corriganville, died Friday, April 18, 1997, at his residenc Born January 5, 1910, at Ellerslie, he was a son of the late Howard W. and Esther E. (Pogue) Burkett. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Burkett retired as a truck driver and construction worker for Baughman's Construction Co. He was a member of the Teamster's Union and had previously worked at the Celanese Corp. in Cumberland. He was a lifetime member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Corriganville, where he had served as an elder for the past 27 years. He was a 44 year life member of Corriganville Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Leola (McKenzie) Burkett; four daughters, Lou Ann Shircliffe and husband Bill, Universal City, Texas, Jean Boor, Corriganville, Connie Martin and husband Dennis, LaVale, and Susan Aldridge and husband Charles, Corriganville; three sons, Robert Burkett and wife Mary Louise, Corriganville, William Burkett and wife Carole, Mount Savage, and Terry Burkett and wife Judy, Mount Savage; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Irvin will be remembered as a loving husband, and a devoted father and grandfather. He was the strength and the love of all his children. Our children, his grandchildren, will remember him as the most remarkable, loving and giving man they have ever known. His grandsons enjoyed his many hunting and fishing stories, and he inspired them to become the kind of good men they all have become. His granddaughters loved his smile and they knew he would have done anything to make their life the best. He was our father, and all of our families adored him. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church for one hour prior to the service. Services will be conducted at St. John's United Church of Christ on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ruth S. Kershner officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers; David, Jim and Tom Shircliffe, John and Jeff Boor, Randy Aldridge, Dennis Martin, and Timothy, Jason, Mickey and Bill Burkett. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce and Terry Lee Burkett.
