- LONACONING — Lawrence A. “Shorty” McKenzie, 78, of 21 West Main Street, died Friday, Feb. 9, 1990, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born June 11, 1911, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late Urban and Sara (Garlitz) McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mae (Matthews) McKenzie, in 1975. Mr. McKenzie was retired from the Celanese Fibers Corp. with 45 years’ service. He was owner and operator of Shorty’s BP Service Station for 45 years and a member of Senior Citizens of George’s Creek and the Lonaconing Hall of Fame. Surviving are one son, Lawrence Eugene “Larry” McKenzie, Lonaconing; one brother, Walter McKenzie, Cumberland; two sisters, Catherine Danahey, Elm Grove, W.Va.; and Ellen Lee Cordial, Lonaconing; and three grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Frostburg, by Monsignor John L. Reinsfelder. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. A Christian wake service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Cumberland Sunday Times, February 11, 1990
