- George Lee McKenzie died March 14 at Franklin Square Hospital after a long illness. He was 69. Mr. McKenzie was a longtime Burnham Road resident and a lifetime member of the Rossville VFW Post 6506. He also belonged to Our Lady of Hope Church. In the late 1960s, he helped longtime friend Zelic Gresser set up Zel Realty Company in Baltimore, which later became known as the Urban Real Estate Management Corporation. Mr. McKenzie was employed there until he retired in 1989. In honor of the retirement, the company awarded him a cruise for two to the Virgin Islands. A corporal in the Marines, the Garrett County native was stationed in Guam from 1944 to 1946. George McKenzie loved to travel, and he returned to Guam in 1994 to once again tour the island. It was then that he married the former Janice Pirie, his fiance of five years, in a beautiful island wedding. The Governor of Guam invited Mr. McKenzie to revisit in July to serve as marshall in the parade celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the Liberation of Guam. Because of illness, Mr. McKenzie was not able to participate. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Georgiann Capsey and Beverly Neiser, sons Bruce and Robert McKenzie, and step-daughter Susan Fama. He also leaves behind grandchildren Lauren, Jessica, Weston, and Clayton McKenzie and Lynsey Neiser, and step-grandchildren Justin and Daniel Fama. His first wife, Anna T. Klosterman, predeceased him seven years ago. George McKenzie was buried March 18 at Holly Hills Cemetery.
