      Ahbau resident passes away

James H. McKenzie of the Ahbau Creek area passed away on December 27, 1987 at the age of 84. A. D. Couldwell officiated at the service held in the Quesnel Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, with Gerald Rosner saying a prayer. James McKenzie was born in Oklahoma in 1903. He moved to Grassland, Alberta with his family in
1909, where he was later married and then in 1936 moved to Kelowna, B.C. Jim, as he was known to his friends, came to the Strathhaver-Ahbau area first in 1937, speculating a homesite, then in the fall of 1939 moved from Kelowna to a homestead along the Ahbau Creek south of New Cinema. He started his farm there, working out in the winter months to subsidize the farm. He worked in sawmills, then later acquired his own sawmill, which he operated until 1964. He also worked on the building of the Quesnel Airport, and the surveying of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. With his love for nature and the outdoors he acquired many outdoor jobs. In the early nineteen fifties he started his own hunting camp and fishing trips guiding Americans on moose and bear hunts. He bagged his last moose in his 80th year, it having a 55 inch spread. He also hunted for the game department as a predator hunter for many years, hunting wolves and cougars in the years when they were a menace to the farmers and ranchers in the Quesnel area. Jim bought a trap line from Mr. Monroe in the mid-forties, trapping it faithfully every year until 1986 when his health began to fail. A devoted gardener, loving flowers, he never became bored with life. He will always be remembered by family and friends for having an open door, for his love and friendly hospitality. Jim is survived by daughters Clara Jensen and Marcella (Bob) Landsell of Quesnell, Ethel (Lawrence) Read of St. Albert, Alberta, Florence (Gordon) Mikkelson of Fort St. John, B.C., sons Arthur and Donald (Betty) of Strathnaver, 23 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Olga in 1976, sons Allen in 1939, James in 1979, and Albert in 1986, brothers Frank, Lawrence and Earl, and sister Verna.

Don Lowe also forwarded the following interestuing note to the author, Michael A. McKenzie in February, 2021.

Hi Mike - No need to list me as a source, already had a McKenzie descendant find me on the site and contact me (hope he dropped you a line too?). My interest is really only for my cousins who are Mckenzie descendants, my work on it is mainly for them. The fellow that contacted me is Stephen Hawtree of Kelowna, BC, he's a great-grandson of Agnes Myrtle McKenzie and James Cecil Robbins. He's early in his own research and must have to work for a living too(!), says his research time is very limited.

Was very interested to see the Oklahomans come to Peers, Alberta, the area is well-known to me, my family on both sides came to Grande Prairie, Alberta which is about 5 hours northwest of Edmonton, before a better highway was constructed straight south of Grande Prairie, we would take the "Peers cutoff" which was the nearest paved road that would get us through to a highway leading to Jasper, Alberta and from there down into British Columbia. The cutoff started at Whitecourt, Alberta, about 3 hours southeast of Grande Prairie, was about an hour long, went through Peers which was really "out in the middle of nowhere" and came out right in the town of Edson. Only other choice had been to drive almost to Edmonton, then turn west about 30 miles from Edmonton instead of east to Edmonton. I'm sure it was the land that brought them to Alberta as it was for mine, my paternal grandparents came from Prince Edward Island and my maternal great-grandparents from western Quebec. The land was just opening up in Alberta in the early 1900's, a person could "file" on a parcel of land, usually starting with a "quarter section" which is 160 acres. If you proved you made improvements to the land over a certain period of time (brush-clearing, home building, planting and harvesting crops, etc) you were given legal ownership to it. Think it was called the Alberta Homestead Act, people came from everywhere.
