- Lonaconing – James Hubert Garlitz, 63, a native of here, was killed in a mine accident yesterday at the Industrial Collyers at Barracksville, W. Va.
Authorities said the miner was working the daylight shift when a slate fall apparently crushed him. Mr. Garlitz was born March 4, 1894 in Lonaconing, a son of the late Shaderick Garlitz and Barbara (McKenzie) Garlitz. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lula Elizabeth Garlitz; a daughter, Mrs. Alice Moskowich, New York, and eight brothers and sisters: Joseph Garlitz of Barracksville, Fred Garlitz of Needles, Calif., Mrs. Ruth Cupp of Mars, Pa., George Steiss and Gus Steiss, both of Barracksville, Henry Steiss of Alliance, Ohio, Emory Steiss of Johnstown, Pa., and Mrs. Carolyn Ankeney, Rector, Pa. Mr. Garlitz was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church of Barracksville. A requiem mass will be celebrated at the church on Friday at 9 a.m. by Rev. Leonard Gleinkus. Interment will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Avilton, Md. The body is at the Ross Funeral Home in Fairmont, W.Va. The Cumberland Evening Times, May 22, 1957
