Notes |
- Died at her late residence, High street, Meyersdale, Thursday, August 12th, Mrs. Lovina , widow of the late Patrick McKenzie, of Greenville township, aged 86 years, 4 months and 18 days, being born March 29, 1823. Mrs. McKenzie had been in delicate health from the infirmities of age during the last six years and during the last two years had been in very feeble health, but was not stricken with her last illness until about six weeks ago. The deceased was born in Allegany Co., Md., and when young married Patrick McKenzie, and lived on a farm in Greenville township. In 1861 he was killed by a tree falling on him. After his death she lived with her family in the same township until 1869 when she moved with her family to Meyersdale where she resided until her death. Mrs. McKenzie was the mother of seven children, four of whom survive, the children preceding her to the grave being Samuel A. McKenzie who was killed by an accident at Garrett, Pa., a number of years ago; James A., who died in Oklahoma six years ago; Emmaline, wife of Zachariah McKenzie, who is also dead. The surviving children are Aaron, of Orland, Ind., Thomas of Meyersdale, Julius S. of Lima, Ind., and Mary at home. She is also survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Cox, 44 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Mrs. McKenzie was a true Christian, being a devout member of the Catholic Church, and in all of her troubles and afflictions always found consolation in her dependence on the Divine will. If any person ever had their share of affliction and trouble, it was her. Her husband first and afterwards one of her sons instantly killed by accident, two more of her children died in the prime of life, while two others are afflicted with the loss of speech and hearing. All these afflictions she bore with true Christian fortitude and never repined at her lot, and though at times her resources were not abundant, still she always tried to help others who were afflicted. Until the spirit passed to the Great Beyond, she found time to glorify God and her pure and gentle spirit passed away thanking her Maker for the blessings vouch-safed to her. The funeral took place at 9 o'clock, Saturday, August 14th, from SS. Philip and James church, a requiem high mass being celebrated by her pastor, Rev. Father Looney. Interment in the Catholic cemetery. Hand dated 1909
