Here is an obituary penned after three of his children dies within a close period of time:
It is true that in this world there is joy and gladness, success and prosperity; but, in the midst of all these, trouble and sorrow follow us in all our undertakings, enters every household and drives joy and happiness from every bosom, as the leaf is driven before the wind; a sorrow and sadness which the sunlight of day, throwing its beautiful rays of light upon the earth, smiling upon the mountain tops and making them attractive to the eye, decorating the clouds with a golden hue; clothing the valleys with beauty; and which throws a brightness in the silvery spray of the cooling water brooks and filling earth, air and sky with her ten thousand charms, would fail to remove. The attention, sympathies and efforts of friends all fail to satisfy the troubled heart or calm the heaving bosoms. Such was the case with the family whom I shall now refer to, living near Ocean Mines: Mr. McKenzie, who has recently lost three of his dear children. Less than a year ago they were attacked with diphtheria. Three times since it has raged in the family: the last time only proving fatal to the three children. During the month of August little Willie, aged three years, nine months and ten days, fell a victim to death — passed over Jordan into Glory amid the shouts of the redeemed. Leaning over the battlements of heaven, up the valley of the shadow of death, Willie beheld his sister Louisa, who 24 days later followed him to heaven, aged seventeen years, 0 months and eighteen days. As the gates are thrown open he comes down in his angelic form and shouts: “Glory to God! Sister has come!” They together look over the battlements of heaven, watching for loved ones to come, when eight days after they saw little Allie, aged five years, 0 months and seven days, coming down the valley and crossing the stream of death, coming up to the gates which fly open. They shout with the redeemed, “Hallelujah! Allie is safe at home.” They today no doubt are watching and waiting for father, mother, brothers and sisters, whom we trust shall all meet in Heaven. Louisa was converted at Woodland; lived a Christian; died a very triumphant death, such as all might wish to die. There is no comfort that is real and lasting can be found anywhere else but in Jesus. Let me say in conclusion to the bereaved, trust all in Jesus, and it shall be well in life, death, and throughout eternity. W. HIRST REED

| Gravestone of Gabriel Thornton McKenzie (b. 1829) Son of James Moses McKenzie (b. 1796). Location of McKenzie Family Cemetery: This cemetery is located on McKenzie Tower Road. It's a dirt road. The Cemetery is back off the dirt road about 40 or 50 feet on the west side. The McKenzie Cemetery is near the Railroad tracks near Pinto,Maryland. Now to find this Cemetery I will start at the intersection of Route 220 and Winchester Road in Cresaptown,Md. Take Winchester Road past Saint Ambrose Church Drive about a mile until you come to the top of a hill, take a left turn onto McKenzie tower Road, The road goes down to a Bridge that crosses the Railroad. If you find the bridge you just passed the Cemetery, its about 400 or 500 feet back up the road on the right side good luck. GPS should work also. Joe McKenzie, Dunedin, Florida. |
