      Descendants of William Grinstead

      Generation No. 1

1.WILLIAM1 GRINSTEAD was born 1634 in East Grinstead England, and died 1661.He married (1) ELIZABETH KAY July 21, 1656 in Northumberland County, VA, daughter of THOMAS KEYS and BESS (UNKNOWN).He married (2) ELIZABETH KAY July 21, 1656, daughter of THOMAS KAY and MARTHA.

      Notes for WILLIAM GRINSTEAD:
William came to Northumberland County VA in 1650.Colonel Mottrum gave 50 acres of VA land to pay for the passage of each servent. At this time, William and 25 men came from England. They were to work as indentured servents for five or six years. When William met Elizabeth Key (Kaye) he was not permitted to marry until he served the full time with his benefactor. In 1653, Elizabeth, sued the estate of Col. Motram and with the help of her lawyer, William, she won (See notes on Elizabeth Key).

      Notes for ELIZABETH KAY:
Elizabeth Key (Kay), a mulatto servent, sued the estate of Colonel John Motram for her freedom.William Grinstead, a 20 year old Englishman was her lawyer and the two of them fell in love. She became the mother of his two infant sons and William married her in 1659.A relative in 1656 bequeathed the boys, William and John some 500 acres of land and provisions for an education, enough to insure them solid footing.Of John's children six are readily identifiable from documents extant and of William's nine. From the children of John and Elizabeth are descended practically anyone who can trace their Greensteed, Grinsted and Grinstead ancestry back to the middle of last century in the country.Elizabeth's father, Thomas Kay, a former member of the House of Burgess wished to ensure his daughter's protection so at the time of his death he bound her over to Humphrey Higginson for nine years as a legal means of doing so (Higginson was her godfather and had, according to records "Promised to use her as well as if she were his own child".(Frontline Article and Research)

In 1655 Jesse Kaye (Key) the half brother of Elizabeth is given a court order to acknowledge Elizabeth as his sister (this occurred at Colonel Mottrom's home). (Information given to me by Melicent Remy).

Children of WILLIAM GRINSTEAD and ELIZABETH KAY are:
      2. i. WILLIAM2 GRINSTEAD II, b. January 20, 1650/51, Northumberland Henrico County VA; d. December 16, 1696.
      3. ii. JOHN GRINSTEAD, b. 1658.

The William Grinstead Family in America page 11, published 1974 states the following: William Grinstead I was born in England in 1634. He came to Northmberland County, Virginia, about 1650 as an indentured servant of Col. John Mottrum. In other words, it seems that he was to work for Colonel Mottrum a given number of years (possibly six) in return for the payment of his passage to America. At the same time Elizabeth Key (Kaye) was a maid-servant to this same family. Apparently William was not permitted to marry until he had served out the full time with his benefactor, and so it was not until July 21, 1656 that he married Elizabeth, the daughter of Thos Key )Kaye). Elizabeth born William two sons, John and William II, and the two brothers married sisters, the daughters of John Parse. In his 1667 will John Parse left his 500 acres of land to the two sons-in-law, the part called "Hog Towne" to John, and the part called "Long Neck" to William. Some of this John's descendants are said to have settled in some of the counties of northern Kentucky even before 1800
