- Ludwig Ulmer immigrated to the U.S. in 1876 when he was 12 years old without his parents knowledge. He worked his way from New York City over the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lived and worked with his Uncle Ulmer (a baker who lived on the Southside of Pittsburgh). In 1892, Ludwig Ulmer married Katherine Post, age 20. They had eight children.
