Born Aug. 10, 1943, in Allegany County, Md., Mr. Griffey was a son of the late Quentin Lynwood and Hazel Ruth Porter Griffey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He received a psychology degree at Frostburg State College, a master's degree in education at the Citadel, and a doctorate in special education at the University of Pittsburgh. A resident of Beaufort, S.C., for seven years, he was a Vista volunteer and later taught students with learning and behavior problems. He started the Special Olympics program there. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburg, working as a senior teaching fellow. In 1984, he joined the faculty at Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, where he developed the special education major in the school of education. A community volunteer, he worked with the Guardian ad Litem program, Habitat for Humanity, and Special Olympics. He coached Richfield Coach Pitch, T-ball and helped start the elementary soccer program. He volunteered in various Piedmont Unitarian Church community-based projects for the homeless. A son, Evan Griffey, preceded him in death. Survivors include son Adam Clay Griffey, Sylva; daughter Katie Griffey, Misenheimer; and brother Robert Griffey, Ellerslie, Md.     LATTA, S.C. — Margaret Elizabeth (Wagner) Griffey, of Latta, S.C., died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at the Mullins Nursing Center. Born Nov. 26, 1916, in Cumberland, she was one of eight children of Peter and Margaret Wagner. She was also preceded in death by her siblings and husband, H. Linwood Griffey. She graduated from Allegany High School in 1934. She was a housewife and mother until moving to Homestead, Fla. with her family in 1963, where she worked for 20 years as a receptionist and bookkeeper. An avid fisherman, she loved boating and the Florida Keys. She was a member of the Ellerslie and Homestead United Methodist Churches. She and her husband moved to Latta, S.C. in 1998 to be with their sons and their families. Shives Funeral Home, Columbia, S.C., is handling the arrangements. Cumberland Times-News, September 5, 2012

    Ellerslie - Quentin L. Griffey, 91, of Ellerslie, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at his residence. Born May 16, 1905, at Ellerslie, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Emma E. (Coleman) Griffey. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel R. (Porter) Griffey, on July 6, 1993. Mr. Griffey was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Griffey was a retired self-employed contractor. He was a member of the Ellerslie United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth R. Griffey and wife Marilyn, Ellerslie, and Dr. Quentin L. Griffey Jr. and wife Ann, Misenheimer, N.C.; three grandchildren, Adam and Katie Griffey and Susan Guthrie; a sister-in-law, Erma Burkett, Silver Spring; and a brother-in-law, Robert Porter, Frederick. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rebecca J. Vardiman officating. Interment will be in the Porter Cemetery near Ellerslie.

    Harry Robert Porter, 73, of Ellerslie, died yesterday in Memorial Hospital. His parents were the late Norman and Sarah (Stair) Porter. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Lydia Lowery; four children, Mrs. Erma Burkett; Mrs. Hazel Griffey and Robert B. Porter, Ellerslie, and Rev. Edward H. Porter, Kensington, and two brothers, John and James Porter, Ellerslie. Mr. Porter was a member of Ellerslie Methodist Church, where services will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. J. L.     Ellerslie - Mrs. Lydia Grace Porter, 87, died Sunday at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born April 15, 1884 at RD 1, Hyndman, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Emma Lowery. Her husband, Harry R. Porter, preceded her in death in 1951. Mrs. Porter was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Ellerslie, a member of WSCS of the church, and the Dorcas Class of the Sunday School. She was also a member of Cumberland Chapter 56, Order of Eastern Star and the Ladies' Auxiliary of Railway Trainmen and Ladies' Auxiliary of the Ellerslie Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Burkett and Mrs. Quentin L. Griffey, both of Ellerslie; two sons, Rev. Edward H. Porter, Wheaton; Robert P. Porter, LaVale; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Myers, Ellerslie, and Mrs. Mae Reighard, LaVale; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, Ellerslie, by Rev. Milton W. Benny, Jr., pastor. Interment will be in Palo Alto Cemetery.
