ELLERSLIE - Flossie S. Smith, 83, formerly of Ellerslie, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at her Luzerne Street residence in Baltimore. Born on Dec. 21, 1916, in Ellerslie, she was a daughter of the late Henry E. and Emma (DeVore) Lowery. She was also preceded in death by husbands, Craig Shaffer and Joseph Smith; a son, Roy Emory Shaffer; a brother, Roy "Bill" Lowery; and three sisters, Elsie Snelson, Florence Emerick and Marion Hosselrode. Surviving are a son, Charles "Patch" Shaffer and wife Linda (Logsdon), Ellerslie; one daughter, Jane Grim and husband Dallas, Baltimore; a sister, Phyllis Cook and husband Albert, Ellerslie; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was a retired press operator for Continental Can Company, Baltimore. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, Pa., Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rebecca J. Vardiman officiating. Interment will be in Porter Cemetery, Hyndman.

Mrs. Emma J. Lowery, 83, of Ellerslie, died yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Rachel (Clites) Devore. Mrs. Lowery was a member of the Ellerslie Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband, Henry Lowery; a son, Roy Lowery, Ellerslie; four daughters, Mrs. Elsie Snelson and Mrs. Phyllis Cook, Ellerslie; Mrs. Marian Hosselrode, RD 1, Hyndman and Mrs. Flossie Smith, Baltimore; a sister, Mrs. Walter Lowery, Ellerslie Road; 36 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home in Hyndman where friends will be received today from 7 until 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. A service will be conducted there Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. Milton W. Benny Jr. will officiate and burial will be in the Porter Cemetery.

Thomas J. DeVore, 87, retired farmer of near Ellerslie, died yesterday in Allegany County Infirmary. He was born April 23, 1864, a son of the late Daniel and Rachel DeVore. His wife, the former Miss Rachel Clites, died in 1940. Mr. DeVore held memberhip in Ellerslie Evangelical Church and Tonkaway Tribe No. 120, Improved Order of Red Men, Cumberland Survivors include four children, Mrs. Henry Lowery and Mrs. George Spellman, Ellerslie; Mrs. Walter Lowery and Harvey DeVore, both of Route 1, Hyndman, Pa., and 28 grandchildren. Rites will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Lowery, Ellerslie, by Rev. Charles Raley. Burial will take place in Porter Cemetery there. Hyndman, Pa., Sept. 15 - Mrs. Rachel Jane Devore, 78, wife of Thomas Devore, died at her home yesterday near Hyndman. She had been ill about six months. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Clites. Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Henry Lowery, Ellerslie; Mrs. Walter Lowery, Hyndman, and Mrs. George Speelman, Ellerslie, and one son, Harvey Devore, Hyndman, 32 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
