    ELLERSLIE — Kenneth L. “Shorty” Burley, 84, of Ellerslie, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his family. Born Jan. 12, 1928, in Hyndman, Pa., he was a son of the late William Nelson and Orpha Blanche (Madden) Burley. He was preceded in death by brothers, George, Rawlin, Floyd, Clyde and Raymond Burley; and sisters, Edna McCray, Helen and Charlotte Burley, and Dorothy Pirkey. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth “Betty” R. (Leonard) Burley, whom he married Dec. 31, 1949; a son, Stephen L. Burley and wife Deloris, of Ellerslie; daughters, Cynthia J. Burley, of Mount Savage, and Beverley K. Shank and friend Al Gill, of Mount Savage; grandchildren Kenny Burley and wife Chandra, Katrina R. Burley and fiance Tony Ballerina, Kristin K. Shank, Cassie M. Rock and husband Will; and great-grandchildren, Linda Burley, Destiny and Ariella So and Joey Ballerina. Mr. Burley served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and later served in the US Naval Reserves. He had worked for the Celanese Corporation, South Cumberland Planing Mill, Squires Electric. He was also a Carpenter and Electrician for the IBEW Local 307. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home Inc., 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

"Betty" (Leonard) Burley of Ellerslie, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 5, 2013 in the loving arms of her daughter Beverley at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. Born March 13, 1932 in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late William G. Leonard and the late Annabel (Smith) Leonard Gordon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth L. Burley who died March 11, 2012. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Billy Leonard; brother, Edward Gordon; and two sisters, A. Myrtle Holt, and Josephine Norris. Surviving are a son, Stephen L. Burley and wife Deloris of Ellerslie; daughters, Cynthia J. Burley of Mount Savage and Beverley K. Shank and friend Al Gill, of Mount Savage; grandchildren, Kenny Burley and wife Chandra, Katrina Burley and fiancé Tony Ballerina, Kristin Shank and friend Brandon Hedrick, Cassie Rock and husband Will; great-grandchildren, Linda Burley, Destiny and Ariella So and Joey Ballerina. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert Leonard and wife Carola and Richard Leonard and wife Peggy; one sister, Gayle Dicken and husband Charles; and many nieces and nephews. Betty married the love of her life, Kenneth at the age of 17. They were married Dec. 31, 1949 in Cumberland, and celebrated 62 years of marriage Dec. 31, 2011. She was a very loving and caring wife and mother during her lifetime. During her children’s early years she chose to stay at home to love and nurture them. Later in her life she worked as a caregiver, providing care to those still living in their own home. Through this she met and made many special friends and was able to give them the love and the care they needed. She loved and enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty enjoyed spending time with her close friends, playing bingo, shopping, and bus trips to Atlantic City and Charlestown. She will be remembered as a very loving, friendly and happy person. Although Betty will be missed by many it is comforting to know that she is at peace now. Our hearts may be filled with sorrow for losing someone we loved so much but her heart is full of joy and we should share in the joy with her as she is now reunited with the love of her life for eternity. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home Inc., 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, Pa., on Monday, April 8, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, LaVale.

He is survived by these children: Mrs. Edna See, Hyndman, RD 1; Mrs. Dorothy Pirkey, Cumberland, Md.; Miss Charlotte Burley, Hyndman RD 1; Floyd, Ellerslie; George, Hyndman RD 1; Clyde, Corriganville; Daniel Raymond, Cumberland; Roland, Avon Lake, Ohio; Kenneth, Ellerslie; and ten grandchildren. He held membership in the Methodist Chapel at Cooks Mills. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Cooks Mills Chapel with Rev. Richard C. Chambers officiating.     Mrs. Orpha Blanche Burley, 52, of Hyndman Rt. 1, died at her home there Wednesday morning, September 10, 1952. She was the daughter of the late John and Ida (Wolford) Madden, born in Hyndman October 26, 1889. She was married to William N. Burley, who survives. Also surviving are nine children, Floyd, Ellerslie; Kenneth, Ellerslie; George, at home; Clyde, Corrigansville; D. Raymond, Hyndman, Roland, Avon Lake, O.; Mrs. Amos See, Hyndman, Rte. 1; Mrs. Kenneth Pirkey, Cumberland; and Charlotte, at home. Other survivors include one brother, Joseph Madden of Cumberland, and one sister, Mrs. John Bingman of Hyndman Rt. 1. Mrs. Burley was a member of the Cooks Mills Methodist Church. Funeral services at that church, Sunday, September 14, 2 p. m., the Rev. T. E. Richardson officiating. Interment in Cooks Mills Cemetery under the direction of Zeigler Funeral Service, Hyndman.
