"Funeral services for Delmar I. Smail were conducted Friday morning in the Donnell-Wiegland Funeral Home by the Rev. Elmer Fenton. Interment was in Mt. Auburn cemetery."

"Mr. Smail, 59, of 103 E. Spring St., died 3:58 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, in Utlaut Memorial Hospital. He operated Del's Heating and Air Conditioning until a heart ailment forced his retirement in November of 1985."

"Born in Fayette county, September 21, 1927, his parents were the late John and Alice (Gelsinger) Smail. He attended school in Brownstown and served in World War II in Germany and the Korean Conflict. Before operating his own business he was associated with Hampton's Plumbing and Heating and Taylor Electric in Greenville and Leisher Appliance in Vandalia."

"On July 9, 1949 he and Betty Grubaugh were married in Fayette county. She survives with a son, Delmar D. of Hillsboro, daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Judy) Widger and Mrs. Kenneth (Cindy) Burge, both of Greenville, and Mrs. Michael (Barbara) Mugler of Highland, and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are eight brothers and sisters, William of Loogootee, Henry and John, both of Brownstown, Richard of Yalesville, Conn., Donald of Mahomet, Dale of Argenta, Mary Pruett of Freeburg, and Artie Cole of Vandalia."

MRS. CHAS. GRUBAUGH DIES AT THE FAMILY HOME

"Mrs. Mary Grubaugh, 65, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26 at the family home at 114 East Randolph street, Vandalia. She was born July 16, 1886 in Loudon township, the daughter of the late Daniel Logue and Stacey McKenzie Logue, and had been a lifelong resident of Fayette county, the past 25 or more years a resident of Vandalia."

"She and Charles Grubaugh were married in 1903. He survives as do also eight children: Mrs. Esta Kline of Altamont; Willie of St. Elmo, and the following all of whom reside in Vandalia: Mrs. Ruth Grubaugh, Lewis, Mrs. Olive Ober, Ray, Marshall and Mrs. Betties Smail. One child is deceased. There are several grandchildren and many other relatives."

"Services will be conducted tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. in the Free Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. John Rupert. Burial will be made in South Hill cemetery. Miller Funeral service {is} in charge."

In that "Day Book" of Uncle Hi's appears an entry on June 22, 1888, which contains the following: "Bob Hoggs mill blowed up. Killed Samuel King and Daniel Logue, Friday, June 22, 1888." The location of the mill was actually in Effingham Co., IL
