John Arthur Shoemake, 77, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center. Born on Jan. 6, 1939, he was the son of the late George Shoemake and Cora Winebrenner Wolford; stepfather, Joseph Wolford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Shoemake; siblings, George Shoemake and wife, Norma, Anna Mary OBrien, Edgar Shoemake, Dolores and Arthur Harris, Mila Belle Paul, Ida May Shoemake, Ernie Witt and wife, Joyce, Raymond Shoemake, Harry Shoemake; sister-in-law, Arlene McKenzie. Following graduation from high school, John served in the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy. He retired as a Staff Sergeant from the U.S. Army after a career of 22 years and was a proud Vietnam veteran. After his military discharge, he sand-blasted silos and was a test car driver for ABL. John was a loving husband, father, provider and a jack of all trades. He has now been reunited with his loving wife of 54 and a half years of marriage to Carolyn. Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly DeAndrea and husband, Steven, Tampa, Fla.; a son, Kenneth Shoemake, LaVale; grandchildren, Brianna DeAndrea and Jordan DeAndrea; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Otero and Garrett Otero; brother-in-law, James McKenzie; sister-in-law, Debbie Negley and husband, Ed; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone. FROSTBURG — Carolyn L. Shoemake, 70, went to be with the Lord after a long, hard and courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home. Born Dec. 1, 1943, in Frostburg, she is the daughter of the late Harry McKenzie and Margaret (Rizer) McKenzie. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one sister, Donna Jean Shriver; and sister-in-law, Arlene McKenzie. Carolyn was a homemaker, loved creating web pages, traveling and going to the beach, but most of all her dog, “Casey.” Surviving is her husband of 54 and a half years, John Arthur Shoemake; a daughter, Kimberly DeAndrea and husband Steven, Tampa, Fla.; a son, Kenneth Shoemake, LaVale; grandchildren, Brianna DeAndrea and Jordan DeAndrea; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Otero and Garrett Otero; sister, Deborah Negley and husband Ed, Frostburg; brother, Jimmy McKenzie, Cumberland; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. HAGERSTOWN - Henry Leo McKenzie, 56, of 402 Mitchell Avenue, died Monday at Baker VA Center, Martinsburg. A native of Frostburg, he was a son of the late Leonard and Edna (Smith) McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was a farmer and meat cutter and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Donna Shriver, Frostburg; Mrs. Carolyn Shoemake, Jessup; Mrs. Debra Carder, Cresaptown; a son, James L. McKenzie, Frostburg; seven sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Lapp and Miss Mary McKenzie, both of Cresaptown; Mrs. Anna Mae Brode, Frostburg; Mrs. Helen Baker, Cumberland; Mrs. Alice Albright, Finzel; Mrs. Edna McCurry, Beltsville; Mrs. Mildred Middleton, Detroit; Mich.; three brothers, Francis McKenzie, Finzel; Irvin McKenzie, Mt. Savage; Eugene McKenzie, Pasadena; and eight grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Rest Haven Funeral Home where a service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today. Born in Frostburg, he was a son of the late William and Sarah (Williams) Rizer. He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of Frostburg Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mary (Eisentrout) Rizer; two daughters, Mrs. Henry McKenzie, Borden, and Mrs. Marshall Caton Jr., Frostburg; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Paul, Mt. Savage, and seven grandchildren. The body is at the residence of Thomas Eisentrout, 66 West Mechanic Street. Services will be conducted Wednesday 2 p. m. at the residence by Rev. Robert W. Curent, pastor of First Methodist Church. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. McKenzie, Borden; four sisters, Mrs. Robert Ryan, Eckhart; Mrs. William Davis, Frostburg; Mrs. Howard Davis, Old Bridge, N. J., and Mrs. Allen Fergueson, Frostburg; two brothers, Thomas J. Eisentrout, Frostburg, and James Eisentrout, Cumberland, and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Rizer was a member of First Methodist Church.
