Married by Rev. Dr. I. J. Martin, Minister of the Gospel, residing at Ellicotts Mills.
Elisha served in the same company and regiment and was a tent-mate with Stephen
Hillsinger (moved to Ellicott City from New York in 1863). Stephen Hillsinger married Sarah E.
McKinzie who was Catharine's sister. Sarah and her husband Stephen attended Elisha and
    Catharine's wedding.

Catharine died of uterine cancer on August 10, 1911. She had had surgery at University of
Maryland Hospital. Surgery was performed by Dr. Frank Martin. She evidently required nursing care
from the first of May 1911 until her death. Nursed by Mrs. C. R. (Rose) Tittsworth and Miss Bessie
Hunt. She was attended by Dr. Wm. B. Gambriul. Among the expenses of her final illness and death
were $84.38 for the undertaker, Stephen Hillsinger & Son, and $16.00 to C. W. Tucker for cemetery
expenses. She was buried at St. John's Cemetery, Howard County.

Records at the Andersonville GA Confederate Prison historical site indicate that Elisha Tittsworth was
a prisoner there. It was the practice to transfer prisoners from the smaller VA prison sites to the larger
camp at Andersonville although it was severely overcrowded.

  3. 10.  David MacKenzieDavid MacKenzie was born about 1798 in Maryland (son of Aaron McKenzie and Mary Rachel Earp); died on 4 Aug 1885 in Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland.

    Notes:

David MacKenzie of Howard Co., Maryland Will dated 06 Jan 1881 (T.B.H. folio 563, MSA film CR 32993). After the death of my beloved wife I bequeath to my children and grand children namely David, Geroge W., Ruth, Catherine, Ellen, Julia Ann, Susan R., and Martha Ellen Tucker 98 acres of land part of three tracts called part of Hobsons Choice, part of Addition to Hobsons Choice, and part of MacKenzies Discovery to be equally divided.

This is the same land handed down by John Mackenzie (b. 1687) via his Will dated 1758 to his son Daniel (b. 1716/1717) then to his son Aaron (b. 1769) then to his son David (b. 1798) and then to be split amonst David's descendants as outlined above. What a wonderful record to track 5 generations of Eastern Maryland MacKenzies.

On a deed (Howard Co., Court Vol. 1 p.8, Liber J.L.M. folio 8 & 9) dated 12 Mar 1840, from Aaron MacKenzie to David MacKenzie of the lands so described "devised to Michael MacKenzie by his father John MacKenzie, by his last will and testament bearing date the seventeenth day of March one thousand seven hundred and fifth eight." It goes on the lay out the location, as beginning at the bounded trees of the Addition to Hopsons Choice, to intersect the outlines of MacKenzie's Discovery Enlarged, containing ninety eight acres.

In consideration of the sum of $5.00 to David MacKenzie and wife Sarah D. of Howard County, Aaron L. MacKenzie obtains the deed to 6 1/4 acres being in a tract of land called Additon to Hobsons Choice. Dated 09 Oct 1868, Howard Co., Maryland Circuit Court, Liber W.W.W. 28 f.448.

By the will of David MacKenzie (MSA film CR32993, T.B.H. f.563) 06 Jan 1881, John W. is left the following: 12 1/4 acres called Hobsons Choice, and 37 acres of Addition to Hobsons Choice adjoining Aaron MacKenzie's lot.

In an email from Dick MacKenzie dated 9 Sep 2013, he wrote:

Now, on to the other Aaron d. 1831, who was the youngest son of Daniel2. His offspring never went to Allegany Co. or anywhere else in Western MD as far as I can tell. Jesse b. 1807 is not of this Aaron. Aaron’s children were born about as follows:

Caleb b. @1791 (Don’s ancestor, who married Elizabeth Pierce and stayed in the Ellicott City area)
Jesse @ 1792 (who is believed to have also stayed in Ellicott City)
Mary L. @ 1795 (Married Joseph Pierce, stayed local, and their daughter Rachel Elizabeth married Joseph McKenzie, brother of Israel Jr.)
    David (my ancestor) b. 1798
Catherine b. 1800 (married John Hancock Hyatt and moved to Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH in the late 1820’s)
Rachel b.@ 1803 (married Enoch Pearce and moved to Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH by 1842. He had a different wife by 1860)
Aaron b.@ 1810 (lived on the family property in Ellicott City w/older brother David, apparently never married)

John Hancock died in Zanesville, and Catherine and the children moved to Knox Co., OH by 1840, when son John is shown as head of household. Why Knox Co? Maybe because she had cousins there? I don’t know if this untangles anything – maybe just makes the mess messier!?

    Dick

On the east side of MacKenzie Lane, north of the intersection of St John's Lane & Old Frederick Road (Rte 99) in the Ellicott (2nd) District of Howard Co, Md., is the remnant of a family burying ground, moved to the present site from its original location on the farm of John W MacKenzie (whose wife was Susannah Keyes). Called 'MacKenzie's Neglect' the property was the site of a blacksmith shop and overnight 'stop-over' for travelers on the road from Hollofield to Frederick. The original house burned, but still standing is an old ban bearing the date 1863. Present owners of the property, now called 'Windy Hill; are Mr and Mrs Norman Otto and Mr and Mrs Phillip hammon who furnished this information.
