- Marlene C. Russell, 81, of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at Frostburg Village. Born on May 12, 1937, in Garrett County, Maryland, the daughter of the late Julia (Dibler) and William Jones Muir. In addition to her parents, Marlene was preceded in death by sister, Wilma Smith; and her husband, Norman; sisters-in-law, Sandy Muir, and Frances Talley and husband Don; brothers-in-law, Bill Welsh, and Robert Gilkey. Marlene was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1956. Following high school, she was employed by the Schwab Company as a seamstress, but for most of her life she was a homemaker and mother. Marlene was a member of the Doughnut Bowling League. She was an avid reader, and she enjoyed listening to country music and doing Sudoku puzzles. Marlene was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, St. Mary Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Richard G. Russell; a son, Kevin M. Russell and wife Joyce, Cumberland; grandchildren, Lindsey O'Brien and husband Dave, Derek Russell, Rachael Lee and husband Jeffrey, and Kylie Martin; great-grandchildren, J.C. and Maria Lee. Marlene was expecting a sweet blessing of another great-granddaughter to be born in September, Addison Marie O'Brien; sister, Flora Gilkey; brother, William Muir; sisters-in-law, Thelma Welsh, and Georgia Russell; Marlene is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept.4, 2018, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor Marlene's memory may make contributions to the Schwab Cancer Center at the Western Maryland Health System, Attn: Julie Hardy, 12500 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502, or Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, 300 East Oldtown Road, Ste. 2, Cumberland, MD 21502. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Frostburg Village Nursing Home for the kind, considerate care they had given Marlene during her illness.
