Notes |
- Gregory Lynn Fertig, age 65, took his last breath fighting esophageal cancer, while in the warm embrace of his family, on the Fertig Farm on June 6, 2018 at 11:30 p.m. Dad was born to parents Wendell W. Fertig and Jessie (McKenzie) Fertig on Dec. 28, 1952. He grew up on the family farm where he gained his hardworking nature that everyone knew him for. He graduated from Keyser High School in 1970 and went on to WVU where he received his BS and MS degrees in agriculture engineering. Dad married Spring Giles Fertig on Dec. 9, 1978, brought Mom back to the farm where they had two children, Gregory B "GB" Fertig on July 19,1979 and Spring Mariah Grace Fertig on April 27, 1981. When my sister was taken from this world by a car accident on August 29, 1987, it devastated my parents, however the loss only brought my parents even closer together. The loss had a major impact on Dad's life; he really matured into a loving and caring person, cherishing life, friends and family around him. He was that person who could go anywhere in the world and he either knew everyone or soon got to know everyone around him. Dad worked several different jobs early in life before finishing his career at Dominion Power at Mt. Storm. After retirement, he began to travel with Mom, successfully visiting every state in the United States. With that complete, he wanted to visit every continent in the world, however he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and began a long battle that ultimately, he could not win. Dad is survived by his father, Wendell Fertig; his wife Spring (Giles) Fertig; son and daughter-in-law, GB and Alicia Fertig; grandchildren, Alexandra and Jett Fertig; brother and sister-in-law, Garret and Cindy Fertig; niece and husband Stacy and Richard Sazille; niece and husband Teresa and Todd Simpson; grandnieces Dallas Smith, Jessie Smith, Victoria Caldwell, Emma Simpson, Cameron Simpson; grandnephew TJ Simpson and hundreds of cousins and close friends. At Dad's request, there will be no funeral service. The Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, Keyser, is in charge of the arrangements.
