    • CRESAPTOWN — Elmer Joseph “Hap” Habersack, 97, formerly of Cresaptown, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Cumberland, where he had been a resident for the past four years. Born on Jan. 1, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late John F. Habersack and Delia (Briner) Habersack Bell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Howell and Angela Zoll; and one brother, Charles Habersack; he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. His wife, Susan Frances McKenzie Habersack, whom he married on Oct. 28, 1937; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Clark Habersack; two granddaughters, Melinda and Gina Habersack; two grandsons, Matthew Habersack and Harvey Rockwell Jr.; and one great-grandson, Joseph Buhl. At the age of 17 Hap joined the Merchant Marines. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy and later served in the Naval Reserve. Hap was employed with the Celanese Fiber Corp., retiring after 40 years of service. While there he belonged to the safety committee, contributing many helpful suggestions and where he designed a wrench that improved safety at the mixers. He was a member of the Cresaptown Fire Department and Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and a Member of Pope John XXIII Council of Knights of Columbus. He was awarded the Archdiocese of Baltimore Medal of Honor. Hap painted signs and posters for various charitable groups and did art stained glass windows for Reliable Glass Company. His hobbies included bowling, painting, fishing, hunting and gardening. Hap is survived by his children, Susan Burkett and husband, Alvin, Patricia Manis and husband, Willie, James Habersack and wife, Vickie, Stephen Habersack and wife, Suella; grandchildren, Philip, Mary Ann and John Burkett, Diane Scott and husband, Stephen, Patricia Dean and husband, Michael, Rebecca Rank and husband, John, Brenda Liller and husband, Eric, Christopher Habersack; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Harris, Melissa Palmer and husband, Devon, Jacob Van Dyke and wife, Jennifer, Luke and Marcia Van Dyke, Jacquelyn Rico and husband, James, Stephanie Cooper and husband, Gerald, Joseph Allison, Jessica Grant and husband, Blake, Denny Raabe, Wyatt Liller, Abigail Habersack; one step-grandson, Colin Rank; granddaughters-in-law, Laura Habersack and Shelley Rockwell; great-grandchildren, Esme Palmer, Tyler, Logan and Mason Van Dyke, Makenzie Currin, Spencer and Ariana Rico, Kay Lynn, Lillian and Anthony Cooper, Samuel, Leighton, Ayla Grant, Hannah Buhl and Harry Rockwell; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held that day at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of christian burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Ambrose Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Honor Guard. The family would like to thank the staff of the Golden Living Center and WMHS Hospice Services and Dr. Huma Shakil for the care and compassion shown to their father over the past few years.
