    • FROSTBURG ‹ Edward C. "Ebbie" Finzel, 87, of 14 Standish St., Frostburg, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. Born May 11, 1912, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Ira George Finzel and Barbara Anna Finzel. A 1929 graduate of Beall High School, he was active in
      varsity sports. He attended Penn State University where he received All-American status in soccer. He traveled with the Penn State soccer team to Scotland to participate in exhibition games there. He graduated from Penn State in 1934 and did graduate work at UCLA and at Columbia University where he received his advanced degree. After having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he taught for a short time at Central High School in Lonaconing, and then moved to Beall High School where he served as Athletic Director, taught physical education, and coached several varsity sports teams. He retired after 39 years of teaching. During his years of teaching, he held several offices in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association. He served as president of the organization in 1966-67. In 1988, he was honored as one of four outstanding Athletic Directors in the state of Maryland. Mr. Finzel was a founder and promoter of the JCP Soccer League. He also was an avid tennis player and promoter of tennis in the area having coached Beall High School's tennis team until his retirement. He was a life-long member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Frostburg. Surviving are his sister, Grace Finzel Bittner; and several cousins. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at St. John's Episcopal Church on Monday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Staup as celebrant. Interment will be in the Finzel Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Finn, Jack Starkey, Jack Skidmore, Wayne Kasecamp, Don Rice and Alan LaPorta. Honorary pallbearers will be James Evans, Eugene Smith, Joseph Martirano, Robert Rephan, J. Suter Kegg, Oberlin Chaney, Nathan Jackson, Robert Mattingly, Enordo Arnone, William Tomlinson, J. Fred Sharer and Dr. John Davis. In lieu of flowers, friends may send memorial contributions to the Building Fund of St. John's Episcopal Church, 52 Broadway, Frostburg, MD 21532, or to the JCP Soccer League, c/o Barbara Armstrong, 116 Wright St., Frostburg, MD 21532.
