- CHRISTIANCY, RODGER, L.—Rodger L. Christiancy was born on Jan. 13, 1926 to Clair C. and Edna Christiancy on the family’s farm in Chelsea township, near Geneva. On Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, Rodger died at his birthplace the family farm, at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 26 days.
He attended School District No. 85 and graduated from Geneva High School in 1943.
On May 26, 1944, Rodger enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a water tender third class, and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Wichita in the Pacific, where he earned a Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon (two stars). He was discharged on June 19, 1946.
After returning home he studied agriculture at the University of Nebraska from 1946 to 1948, before returning home to work with his father on the family far.
On Feb. 22, 1954, he married Shirley M. McDermet of Hebron. The couple farmed near Grafton for two years and then moved back to their present home, the Christiancy family farm.
He was an active, community-minded person, serving on the Ohiowa CO-OP Board, the Chelsea Township Board, was secretary-treasurer of the Geneva Rural Fire Department, and president of the Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Geneva School Board, the F.F.A. Advisory Board, Sloan-Bolton American Legion Post No. 68 and the Samuel J. Marsh V.F.W. Post No 7102 in Geneva.
Throughout his life he was always an avid sports fan and a strong support of both Geneva High School and the University of Nebraska athletics. For many years, he was a member of the University’s Touchdown Club and regularly attended Nebraska football and basketball games.
Rodger loved farming and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was especially fond of the families’ dogs, Herbie and Scooter. He and his wife, Shirley, were the favorite uncle and aunt to their many nieces and nephews.
In 1980, the Christiancy farm was honored by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben with the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award for being in the same family for 100 years.
Preceding him in death were his father, Clair Christiancy Sr.; sister, Ardith Schmid; and brother, Clair Christiancy Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; mother Edna Christiancy; sister, Evelyn Volf; brother, Robert Christiancy and wife Kay; sister-in-law, Marilyn Christiancy; nieces, nephews and a host of good friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, from the United Methodist C church in Geneva with the Rev. Dennis Linton-Hendrick officiating.
Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin Myers who sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”.
Casket bearers were Clair Christiancy III, Jim and Steve Christiancy, Dr. James Maly, Kent Myers and Kurt Myers.
Honorary bearers were James Biba, Keith Burt, Charlie Elznic, Vaughn Fulton, Dean Heath, Kenneth Hofferber, William Watmore, and Dick Walters.
Military flag presentation was provided by V.F.W. Post No. 7102 and American Legion Post No. 68 of Geneva.
Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
