- Death Notes: Marlene Joyce Samis - June 15, 1933 — November 4, 2020 -- With broken hearts the
family of Marlene Samis announce her passing on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at the age of 87
years.
Marlene was the loving Matriarch of our family and leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 68
years, Reg, two sons, Neil (Brenda) and Dean (Monica), 6 grandchildren (Krista, Becky, Kori, Trevor,
Kelly, Brent), and 14 great grandchildren.
Marlene was a long term resident of Drayton Valley and through her community service and active
lifestyle leaves her legacy and memories for many friends and family to share. Marlene was
predeceased by her mother and father Dick and Florence Neilson and brother Budd.
Marlene was raised in Bon Accord, Alberta. Not too long after marrying her high school sweetheart,
Reg, they moved to the 'oil frontier' of Drayton Valley in 1955 near the start of the oil boom in the
Pembina Oilfield. Marlene and Reg were passionate about being involved in community activities and
volunteerism. Marlene was warm, caring, generous, kind, and a tireless worker and volunteer. She
was an avid and accomplished curler, golfed, and donated hundreds of hours of her time to many
organizations but mostly the Drayton Valley Hospital Auxiliary Gift and Thrift Shops of which she was a
founding member and belonged for over 50 years!! She was a member of Eastern Star and the United
Church holding Board positions in both organizations. But most of all, Reg and Marlene were loving
and committed parents and grandparents who served as the most fabulous role models of what a true
loving relationship is. Their family and friends use their relationship and commitment to family as a
guide to developing a close family unit. They built a quaint home on a beautiful acreage affectionately
called 'the farm' where grandkids, great grandkids and countless friends of the family spent countless
hours enjoying life together. Though we are all saddened by her loss, we cherish her long life and the
many memories we all have been able to share with her.
A Memorial will be held this coming spring when hopefully the world is a safer place and her friends
and family can gather to celebrate her fabulous life and accomplishments. If friends so desire memorial
donations may be made to the Drayton Valley Hospital Auxiliary (4550 Madsen Ave, Drayton Valley, AB
T7A 1N8)
