- LONACONING - Donald Phillip Preston, 70, of 3084 Avilton-Lonaconing Road, Lonaconing, went home to be with his
heavenly Father, and join his family and friends that have gone on before him on Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded in love with his family at home. Born Dec. 1, 1936, in Barton, he was the son of the late John and Gladys (Imes) Preston. Two brothers, Allen "Buddy" Preston, and Calvin Preston; and a sister, Hazel Moore, also preceded him in death. Don was United States Army veteran, having been a Sergeant, during the Korean War. He was a self employed concrete contractor, and was owner of Bedrock Building Stone Quarry, Avilton. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, and a member of the Alvin C. Neat V.F.W., Lonaconing. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he just loved to work, and enjoyed gardening. He leaves behind his life partner, Emma; his children, RoxAnn and John Martin, of Frostburg, Greg and Shelley Preston, of Frostburg, Randy Preston, of Barton, Jeremy Preston and girlfriend Tricia Steyer, of Barton, Barbara and Jimmy Dale Thorpe Sr., of Greensburg, Pa., Perry and Michelle Walker, of Frostburg, Diana Stevens and fiancée Lee Culp, of Berryville, Va., and Donna Shriver and companion Kevin Kergan, of Frostburg. He is also survived by three brothers, Dale Preston and wife Janet, of Barton, Johnnie Preston and wife Karen, of Westernport, Charlie Preston and wife Mary Margaret, of Barton, three sisters, Margaret Jenkins, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Martha Wilt, of Bittinger, Helen Preston and husband Ervin, of Barton, his grandchildren, Nicole and Ashley Martin, Keith Preston and wife Corrie, Andrew Preston, Austin Lapp, Jimmy Dale Thorpe Jr., Teresa DeVito and husband Louis Jr.; and their children, Isabella and Trent, Mitchell Thorpe, Kaitlyn and Cody Walker, Garrett Walker, Sarah Stevens and daughter Emma Tyler, Justin and Jesse Shriver and Madison Kergan. Don will be looking down from Heaven when his great-grandson will be born. Keith and Corrie Preston are expecting a son in October and his name will be Ethan Donald. The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a memorial service at the Boal Chapel on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m., with Don's brother Charlie as officiate. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Mission, Avilton, on Thursday at 11 a.m., with Father James Hannon as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Avilton. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Andrew Preston, Jimmy Dale Thorpe Jr., Mitchell Thorpe, Cody Walker, Garrett Walker, Justin Stevens, Jesse Stevens, and Austin Lapp. Honorary pallbearer will be Keith Preston, who is serving in the United States Army and currently stationed in Alaska. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, or St. Michael's Catholic School, Frostburg. Cumberland Times-News, August 21, 2007
