- HILTON?HEAD, S.C. — Helen W. Compton, formerly of Keyser, W,Va., and Cumberland, passed away peacefully in her home at the LifeCare Center in Hilton Head on July 27, 2015. Helen was born Oct. 5, 1918, in New Germany. She was the daughter of the late Asa J. and Rella (Murphy) Fresh. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Chester J. Compton; her first husband, Robert J. Lacy; two brothers, Hubert Fresh and Allen Fresh; and two sisters, Ann Plummer and Dorothy Michael. Helen is survived by three stepdaughters, three stepgrandsons, five step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. For many years, Helen was associated with Colonial Music of Cumberland and Family Music of LaVale, from which she retired in 1978. She was an accomplished organist and for years, visitors to the Cumberland Fair were entertained with her enthusiastic musical renditions on the organ. Helen was a member of First United Methodist Church in Keyser, where she served as a mentor for acolytes for many years. Mrs. Compton’s body will be cremated and her remains will be interred in the United Church of Christ cemetery in New Germany. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
