- Vernon R. Emerick, 49, of 214 Decatur Street, died Sunday in the Martinsburg VA Center, where he had been a patient for one week. A World War II veteran, he was a native of Wellersburg, a son of Mrs. Florence Baker Emerick, Berlin, Pa., and the late Russell C. Emerick. Also surviving are his wife, Mrs. Florence Lowery Emerick; six stepchildren, Donald and Leslie Emerick, Wellersburg; Fay, city; Mrs. Sue Kifer, city; Mrs. Patricia Perdew, Formosa; and Mrs. Paulette McCoy, Hyndman; a brother, Victor Emerick, Rockville; a sister, Mrs. Irene Valentine, Barrelville, and 11 step grandchildren. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, where friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Kenneth Korns will officiate and burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, with military rites by the Hyndman VFW post and the Bedford Honor Guard. The Cumberland News, December 3, 1968
Vernon was 6 ft., 6 inches, the tallest man recruited by the Cumberland Recruitment Center for WW II in January 1942.
