Note on AllCoGenWeb on September 16, 2013:
Ida Mae CROWE was born on 27 Jun 1890 and died on 11 Aug 1977 in
Westernport, Allegany Co., MD at age 87. She had my grandfather, Oliver Crowe Smith, as a single mother, in 1911. She never married his father. According to the
family his name was Billy Smith, and he wanted to marry her all their lives.
He would visit and spend time with my grandfather when he was a child. When
Oliver was about to marry my grandmother, Mae told them if he would marry
with his father's last name of Smith, that she would marry Billy Smith. She
never did, and when I tried to get her to talk about it, she would not. There
are several Billy Smith's in the area at that time (big surprise), so I
don't know for sure which one is him. On the censuses from the early 1900's, Mae
and Oliver live with her parents, and Oliver is listed as Charles's son,
then grandson. My tree on Ancestry is Smith-Metcalf 2012, if you want to take
a look. A sad story and a mystery that I may never be able to solve. I also
wonder why John F. and Elizabeth Porter Crowe died the same year, 1835. Was
there an epidemic of some sort in Allegany County then? Their son, Thornton,
was raised by the Porters, his mother's people.

Note to Genie Ragan on September 25, 2013:
So sad that she would never tell us about him, or let herself take a chance on happiness. My grandfather, Oliver, did not have an easy time of it growing up the child of a single mother in the early 1900's. At least you have provided me with a chance to fill in that terribly short branch on my family tree!! My dad, and his brothers and sister were always told that Mae was a friend of the family, who raised Pap after his parents died. My father was grown, and we had moved to Kentucky, before my mother told him who Mae was. Small town, where folks know more than they say, right? I was a young teenager then, and from that time on, always signed my cards for her, from your great-granddaughter. She never forgot a birthday, even after we moved to Kentucky in 1970. The very last birthday card she sent me before she died, she finally signed "your great-grandmother". She always lived with Oliver, and helped to raise her grandchildren, without letting them know who she really was. Just hard to understand.
